Well, we did do very well against the Astros this season.

Yes we did, with a clear 27-21 RS-RA advantage in 7 games (also swept the other Texas team, 6-0). Let's say we would have been in the Rays' slot, right? If everything else turned out the same, we would have had to beat the Indians (3-3) in a best-of-three, Yankees (7-12) in a best-of-five, and Astros (4-3) in a best-of-seven. No face-offs against the Mariners (2-4) or Blue Jays (9-10). The over-achieving Guardians, injured, old, and confused Yankees, and an Astros team that we seem to have some inner knowledge about--to be honest, it's not completely unlikely that we could have done it.

My major skepticism would have been about the bullpen and how it weakened near the end, especially fears of over-working or injuring the Mountain. But Cionel had a strong September, Baker and Hall were coming on strong in their last few weeks (1 ER allowed in their final 19 appearances combined!), and there were small signs of an Akin return to early-season form. On the other hand, Krehbiel and Tate seemed to be tiring.

People will say our starting pitchers weren't post-season quality, but you never know. Plenty of eminent aces have been out-pitched in this year's playoffs--and don't forget Joe Saunders!

We'll never know....
