There are 5 guys on the list I don’t want at all.

Senga isn’t interested in coming here.

Basically you have Bassitt, Rodon, Eovaldi and Quintana although I’m not sure how much I really would want Quintana.

Quintana does feel like the guy they end up with though.

I’ve always liked Quintana.   I wouldn’t be thrilled if he were our biggest pitching acquisition of the offseason, but it wouldn’t shock me if he worked out, either.

I believe Senga's whole thing was that he's wanted to come to MLB awhile, but his Club never posted him (in essence they didn't trade Manny Machado).     Now he's unemployed and I think same as Rodon, Correa, Bassitt, etc. today.

The left-handed bat who seems good has those NPB-MLB mechanics to step through.

Thanks.

Does the Mets Quintana signing take them off the board for Rodon? Yankees are probably off the board after signing Judge.  If we are in on Rodon who is our main competition?

It's hard to know what the Mets will do. They lost deGrom, Walker and Bassitt to free agency and have now added Verlander and Quintana. Do they add one more? Or go with Peterson or Megill in the 5-spot? I would imagine they're probably out on Rodon, but wouldn't be surprised if they brought back Bassitt or another SP.

I also wouldn't completely rule out the Yankees. They do still need to add a starter. After Judge, it's probably more in the Kluber/Cueto area, but who knows.

San Francisco clearly has money and could bring him back. The Jays are still looking for one more starter. As are the Dodgers.

I like any of the lefties in there. Bassitt, Rondon (price maybe to high for me though). Quintana or Mannea.  If I had to pick Bassitt number 1 the Mannea 2.   I think Mannea is a sleeper his numbers overall we’re not great but he gets out lefties and really struggled vs righties last year.  With the new LF wall teams will want to use more left handers in general in Baltimore because of the dimensions imo.  That means you either have to play lefty on lefty or use right hand hitter and deal with the wall.

Bassit is a righty.

With some of these teams stocking up on pitching it makes me think trading might be a better option.  If the Mets Senga as you say then Peterson doesn’t have a place in rotation.  The Mets still seem a bit week in the outfield.  It would make sense for us to to fill a hole in rotation with our outfield depth.  Peterson for Hays would seem to be a good move for both teams or maybe Santander for Peterson plus Vientos?

Many teams are looking for starting pitching besides those listed.Twins and Red Sox maybe the Padres. In the lower priced free agents ,supposedly Pirates, Tigers and Nationals. The Nationals supposedly made an offer to Lyles. Astros and Mariners also around.

Maybe there are stuff in the statcast data that are red flags that I didn't see but to me a guy that had a 2.93era last year with a 2.99 FIP over 165 innings only getting 2/26 seems like exactly the type of pitcher the O's should have been overpaying on a 2 year deal to get. I'm not sure how they can think Gibson at 10 mil is a good deal but Quintana isn't.

Obviously there is more to the decision than money and who knows if Elias likes Quintana but comparing the Gibson to Quintana deals I would have preferred Quintana.

    • I'll be honest, he's surprised me a bit with his defense and speed this year. His spring speed is 67th percentile and better yet, he's looked pretty decent, if not a little awkward, even while playing giant left field in Camden yards. Now, saying that, his reaction times have been quite poor (-2.9 ft/sec) and his burst is not great (-1.1 ft) but his routes have been pretty good and he's still getting used to MLB stadiums with upper decks. Heck, he even maxed at a 96.1 MH throw which is more arm strength then I've seen before.  So I have to give him some credit for doing some things this offseason to better his defensive abilities. Even Colton Cowser, who is is 9 OAA this year in the outfield and covers 34.8 ft/sec (1.3 ft better than average) was 1-.2 last year so sometimes it takes a bit.  Is Kjerstad better suited for RF than LF in Camden Yards, sure, but his defense has actually been ok out there. He's playable and should get better.
    • Not interested in any of those guys. Tallion is no better than Irvin or Suarez
    • Kremer hasn't been very good at Norfolk. How much longer can he stay there? Maybe we make two trips through the rotation until the All Star break. I also wonder if Burnes makes the AL squad, and he almost certainly will, does that mean he has to skip that last Sunday start?
    • Sorry the Moon and the Stars. I bet the asking with be one of our top 3 plus.
    • Huh? I did no such thing. I may have pointed out his poor start like I point out lots of things, but at no point, and I mean no point, not even in the furthest of miscommunications could anyone decipher that I posted some skepticism over Basallo. What I pointed out was how unbalanced at the plate he was early in the season. He was. I didn't state anything other than that.  I was an early adopter of him as a prospect, I knew his age and his elbow injury coming into this season, and I know that catching takes toll. You are sounded mistaken or misinformed or misremembering. I've said since last year that he very well may be the best prospect in the system, bar none. His upside with the bat is immense with only Mayo having similar upside for power.  And you think you are the one who brought up his age like everyone else did not know? Ridiculous.
    • Jon Morosi just reported on 670 The Score that the Cubs are signaling to teams that they are open to selling later this month. No trade talks are imminent. Bellinger, Happ, and Taillon all mentioned as candidates to clear money while refreshing the roster. — Locked On Cubs (@LockedOnCubs) July 1, 2024
