I don’t think it will surprise anyone who watched yesterday’s game to learn that the ump had an extremely wide strike zone.  He called 7 wide pitches strikes, plus another that was borderline wide but clearly low.

It’s the well-known bias in favor of the Orioles that the Yankee and Red Sox fans complain about all the time.  😉

Look at it this way: if your catcher is one of the best at framing pitches, then your team is going to get more of the borderline calls than your opponent.

Also, I believe that the overall factor views every pitch as a binary ball or strike. Strikes called on a pitch two inches off the plate vs eight inches off the plate are treated as equally wrong, even though most people accept that close balls are going to be called strikes fairly often.
