Don’t forget one that doesn’t show up in the umpire scorecard.  Cionel Perez gets the check swing “swing” third strike on Matón.  A definite check swing that the 3B umpire called a swing.

This was so huge.

He was bad but fairly consistent. O's definitely benefited in some situations.

Through April, we are +1.44 runs.  Pretty negligible in the scheme of things.

I don’t think it will surprise anyone who watched yesterday’s game to learn that the ump had an extremely wide strike zone.  He called 7 wide pitches strikes, plus another that was borderline wide but clearly low.

Why does it seem like everyone of these says that the overall factor favored Baltimore?

It’s the well-known bias in favor of the Orioles that the Yankee and Red Sox fans complain about all the time.  

Look at it this way: if your catcher is one of the best at framing pitches, then your team is going to get more of the borderline calls than your opponent.

Also, I believe that the overall factor views every pitch as a binary ball or strike. Strikes called on a pitch two inches off the plate vs eight inches off the plate are treated as equally wrong, even though most people accept that close balls are going to be called strikes fairly often.

Yes, yesterday was as bad as we, Gregg Olson and Kevin Brown all thought.  15 balls that were called strikes.

Honestly, watching the game, I thought he was even worse. 72% strike accuracy is pretty atrocious though.

Joe West retired too. He’s got a lot of work to make up for the 2 worst in the league.

I actually wasn’t a huge proponent of it either. Started coming around sometime last year. Now firmly behind the idea.
