No doubt….but I also think he thought he would get him, which he would have if the throw was accurate.

I think Tellez not sliding made it a very hard play.   I don’t think Gunnar anticipated Tellez wouldn’t slide and didn’t have time to put it in his pocket.

Where we disagree is the bolded part, that's all.

If you have never seen Gunnar make a tougher throw then you must listen to the games on the radio.  Would have been a great play.  I have a BIG problem with you saying it never had a chance.  Like he doesn’t make that play 10 of 10 times or something.

Well he clearly doesn't, or he would have made that play.

I'm just saying when I watched it with my own eyes, I knew it had no chance. Now did I assume he'd make a good enough throw for Mounty to catch it? Definitely, yes. But it was never going to make it in time. So why risk it?

I’m not saying he makes it 10 of 10.  You’re talking like he makes it 0 of 10.  I think he probably makes it better than 50% of the time.   No way to prove it but I paused on replay when the ball is 5 feet from Mountcastle and the runner just takes his last lunge.  I think the throw beats him if on target.

After watching it a few times just now, I will concede he probably should attempt it. It's do or die and he's kind of off-balance and hucking it side arm. Just not his best throw.

Someone can probably do better.  Here’s a shot of the ball just before the runners foot hits the bag.  Keep in mind, if the throw is on target Mountcastle is probably catching it right now.

Do you think if Gunnar doesn't throw it ,that the runner from second would have tried to score?Would have been a tough throw and he would have to get up and make an accurate throw home at a tough angle

Man, watching that play live, my first thought after Gunnar managed to field the ball was "Holy sh-t! Dude just won this game with a play like that!"

I'm still shocked it turned out as it did.

No way I'm asking Gunnar to put that in his pocket. Had he, there'd be folks on here criticizing him for that.

Agree 100 percent. As a great man once said: “you play to win the game.”

    • It's not just that. But it's all of it (I would argue). It's the message that the org has made to the fans/potential paying customers through their actions, that we are not willing to do what it takes to be excellent. Yes we will give you a good team but we are not ever going to be committed to becoming great. That goes into the crappy ball park, the refusal to add meaningful payroll no matter what, the dogmatic adherence to "budget ball", etc. Who's the face of the Rays? They had Longoria for a long time, but everyone else they got rid of when the time came to trade them or keep them. (Except Franco and who knows what will happen there?) Every time that they have had a team in serious WS discission/contention, they never make meaningful adds to that team to try to win it all. What big FA have they ever signed? IMO all those things matter as the message you send to the potential customer/fan.
    • I didn't know this, I suspect a lot of people who aren't fans of the Padres didn't know this.
    • Stuff+ doesn't look at if a ball is a strike or not. What good is having incredible Stuff+ numbers if you have a WHIP of 1.500. I'm sure Fujinami has great Stuff+ numbers but we all know he can't pitch. I have no idea what PitchingBot is, but Kopech's FIP is 5.67. His xERA is 4.26 and the statcast models do not LOVE Kopech. His Pitching Run Value is negative for every pitch he throws. He's well below average in every area except for xBA, Fastball Velocity, Whiff%, K% and Extension. Every other model is below average to poor. He's prone to giving up HRs as well.
    • I don’t agree at all.  Everyone knows Boras’ reputation for playing hardball with teams and often taking players to free agency.  If you hire him, you do it because that’s the kind of agent you want.  The players’ aren’t innocents being led down the wrong path by Boras.  They’re going down the path they choose.
    • Oh, please!   There you go again.
    • Sure.  I agree to an extent.   Elias obviously enjoys having depth, both for the ML team and for trading pieces.  It’s just my opinion that there are certain guys he’s unwilling to include.   He should be able to get upgrades even without those three on the table.   Hypothetically, if Elias offered Kjerstad + for Crochet and the WS insisted on Basallo or Mayo, I believe Elias would move to plan B.   He’s willing to give up something for short term gains but he’s going to draw the line somewhere.
