O's get Bud Norris

His unsustainably low HR/FB, his inability to get lefties out, his declining velocity and accompanying declining K/9, his high flyball tendencies, his very poor track record prior to this year, his move from a neutral park to an extreme hitters' park (especially for LHB), his WHIP of over 1.4 (bottom ten among qualified AL starters), his SIERA of 4.50 (bottom ten among qualified MLB starters), his awful changeup. Any one or two of these would be a red flag. All of them combined is a gigantic flashing sign that says STAY AWAY.

I mean, I'm not crazy about the K-Rod trade, because I don't like trading for relievers or rentals and definitely not rental relievers, but Rodriguez has a track record of being a good pitcher, which Norris doesn't. And if Rodriguez's value is inflated, then what's Norris?

What is the SIERA for the rest of our starters? I can't find that stat. I mean, I can find FIP and xFIP, etc but I can't find SIERA. I'm just curious, because according to FIP, Tillman should have a near 5 ERA, but I guess that is why they play the games, and not just go by numbers.

Sox gave up slightly more to get Peavy, but he is the better pitcher (if he can stay off the DL). Better walk rate, hits per nine, better strike out rates, and effective against both lefties & righties... and he is doing all this in the tougher league.

He will improve the Sox's chance of winning the division more than Norris will improve ours (and isn't that what trades at the deadline are all about?)

Tougher league? The Astros are in the AL.

Yeah...I had to read the following like 4-5 times,

His declining K's can partly be explained by moving from the NL to the AL and not facing a pitcher 2-3 times a game.

...because I couldn't figure out what in the world he was talking about. I completely forgot Houston was in the AL now. :o

Here you go.

Feldman > Norris

Anyone else agree?

The road Norris or the home Norris? The odd-year Feldman, or the even-year Feldman? The so far in 2013 Norris, or the career Norris? If you judge Norris by his road record with a NL-to-AL career adjustment you could probably argue he's worse than Jake Arrieta. There's a lot of overlapping and contradictory information that could push your choice pretty significantly either way.

So, what do you make of a stat that has Jason Hammel at 4.66 and Chen at 4.57? That essentially says that the two are pretty close to each other in performance this year, no?

According to that stat, Scott Feldman is the best starting pitcher on the Orioles.

I think that most pitchers with the peripheral stats of Chen and Hammel end up with pretty similar results. Chen is not pitching (overall) like someone with a sub-3.00 ERA. His strikeout rate is significantly down from last year, his walk rate is a bit better, and his HR/FB rate is about as low as you'll see.

I'd suggest you use xFIP/FIP/SIERA as a jumping off point to explain why traditional results don't always add up to peripherials, but can be a vector in the direction of likely future results.

Is he going to start or relieve?    I know he's been starting in the minors.

They have a double header on Tuesday.

As for starting in the minors, last couple of starts he has only been going two innings in an effort to control his workload.

He will pitch out of the bullpen, at least initially.

    • I don’t see them burning a year of control of JH after the Baker’s Dozen or so games he’s had with the big club so far. I don’t think we see him before September, even in the event of a series of injuries.  Everyone wanted him promoted. He probably earned it in spring training. However he looked lost at the plate and showed in the field some of what I have described about my lack of trust in his overall fielding (yes I park on his lack of arm strength but the fielding overall is not awesome) and while I do think that he would eventually figure it out because he’s too good of a hitter, every game counts. Having a black hole in the lineup entering this stretch of the season that will get more difficult (the next seven series are: Yankees, Reds, Gnats, DBacks, Jays and Mariners) they need all of the offense that they can get from every position player on the 26-man and just can’t afford to let him figure it out. Plus he doesn’t offer the defense that a Ramon or Jorge offer. He's going to get back to himself. He’s going to continue to improve at 2B and he will obviously be back up at some point but not before rosters expand, imo. The average fan really has no concept of just how good major league players are comparatively. The gap from the top league to the next best (AAA) is so wide the only thing that I can compare it to is college kids joining the PGA to play against Tiger Woods in his prime. It’s almost unfair. That’s the leap that these kids take from AAA to MLB. JH will be fine but I don’t think we see him before they cutoff to retain that controllable year.
    • I almost thought he was trying to pitch to contact, knowing that the team needed him to pitch deep into the game.  The previous game he struck out a ton of guys but needed 101 pitches in 5.1 innings to do it.  That would not have been a good outcome today.   Of course, if you’re pitching to contact, how are you walking 4 guys?   Lucky for Kremer, 3 of those walks were erased on DP’s the very next batter.  That’ll help a pitch count! Overall, though, I’m liking Kremer’s array of pitches this year.  He’s substituted a splitter for his old change-up and it’s a better pitch.   He’s really got a lot of weapons at his disposal.
    • Not only is it shocking MLb did it but an MLB led by Manfred.  That is what really shocks me.
    • We face a lefty tomorrow.  If we’re facing a righty, sitting Adley (who would be replaced by McCann) doesn’t open up a spot for Kjerstad.
    • I think the quality has gone down since they started pre cooking it in the warehouse and carting it down.  And of course the charm of the smoke cloud wafting over Eutaw St is gone too.
    • I mean, for all of Ryan McKenna's virtues he's no Blondie Purcell.
    • Absolutely, but I think it needs to be the right veteran. Even then, someone can have a different opinion and it's just that, their opinion.
