Worst offensive approach of the entire season thus far

Last time we played bad teams we ran through them to accumulate a 10 game streak

But this kind of playing down to the opponent is much more the norm for us 

 

 

It's too early to get too upset about them playing down. Yeah, this is a bad team with a bad pitcher and our offensive approach has been awful, but Bradish has done well in his return and there is still four more innings to get something going.

Rutschman just watches a get more curveball, then weakly swings at a low and away change and fouls it off. Then watches a low and away backdoor curveball. Terrible at bat.

If you are looking at going  the other way, none of that happens.

      I don't believe Mike Torrez fits the category of being past his prime when he was with the Orioles. He pitched only one season for Baltimore.  All he did that year was start 36 games, completing 16 of them, pitching a total of 270 2/3 innings and going 20-9 with an ERA of 3.06.  He would go on to pitch another nine seasons in the majors and win another 104 games before he was done.

      Hitting, defense, and offensive depth were three of the things I was least worried about going into the season and then by the end of it, they were all I could think about.  I'm a lot more skeptical of the coaching than I usually am when things are going wrong.  The team seemed to completely lose focus, took a ton of poor hitting approaches.  I think a very young team is great but they needed something or someone to make them gel and keep a competitive spirit. And that's why, I'm calling it now, our biggest offseason signing will be bench coach Michael Jordan.

      Criticizing Hyde’s pitching decisions in the series holds very little water in my opinion. He let Burnes go 8+, which is what you do with an ace who is dealing. He let Eflin only go twice through the lineup and took him out when matchup appropriate, which is what you do with a mid-rotation guy who doesn’t really have his A stuff. And he then piecemealed his way through Game 2, which is what you do when you have a bunch of mostly interchangeable relievers who all have platoon splits against a lineup that also has fairly significant platoon splits.  All of it worked. 3 runs allowed in 2 games will be hands down the second-best pitching performance in the WC round. The pitchers and the deployment were not the problem. They were not even a problem. The biggest mistake Hyde made in the series became even bigger because he repeated it again today. Pitching to Witt with a runner on 3rd and a base open was inexcusable. And he did it twice. It’s the kind of thing that a casual fan on a couch knows you can’t possibly do against a team like KC — you cannot let Bobby Witt Jr. beat you. And we did. Twice. They have a bona side superstar and then a few other good players. We absolutely had the ability to take him out of the game. And we just chose not to. Beyond that, I think not having McCann bunt in the 3rd inning of Game 1 was the biggest mistake. I hate bunting as a general rule, but McCann was always going to be a massive K risk against Ragans. Taking a smaller but more “guaranteed” positive outcome seems like a better choice than praying that somehow McCann gets a knock off Ragans. I get the critique of letting Cowser hit. I don’t think I could have brought myself to do it, and I don’t believe most managers could have either. But I get the rationale and I can’t really argue too much with it.

      Crushing for a Lego enthusiast. He had a good year.      The team will disappoint if Adley and Gunnar don't do more in these spots. I think we'll mostly be happy if Holliday and Mayo in '25, and Basallo in '26 can play as well as Cowser in '24, minus the clutch kryptonite.
