Gunnar wins BA MIL POY

Well deserved.

Yesterday I listened to an MLB Pipeline podcast where they identified 3 candidates for player of the year at each position, plus 10 pitchers (4 RH starters, 3 LH starters. 3 relievers).   So, 34 players in all (no DH).   Gunnar was one of their 3 candidates for SS, but there were no other Orioles prospects named.

Well deserved. MLB Pipeline doesn’t like him quite as much as BA. Callis and Mayo talk about the Reds SS Elly De La Cruz, Arizona OF Corbin Carrol, the Mets C Francisco Alvarez and the Brewers OF Jackson Chourio in the same breath as Gunnar. All are fine players, but BA loves Gunnar.

Kind of a make up for not calling him up this year?  I thought he’d the nod along with Gunnar.

Put it this way - the only basis for it not to be Gunnar is that Gunnar spent the last 35 days of the season in the majors.

If you take Gunnar out of the equation, I think the other logical candidates are Westburg, Norby, Ortiz and Cowser.  Here’s the resume for each - all rankings exclude players who played in the majors or who had under 300 PA:

Westburg: 2nd in runs (96), 2nd in hits (144), 1st in doubles (39), 2nd in homers (27), 1st in RBI (106), 3rd in BB (70), 8th in BA(.265), 9th in OBP(.355), 2nd in SLG (.496), 3rd in OPS (.852), 1st in total bases (270).   Played most of the year in AAA after two months of AA.

Norby: 3rd in runs (92), 4th in hits (133), 5th in doubles (23), 1st in HR (29), 3rd in RBI (73), 6th in BB (65), 3rd in BA (.279), 1st in SLG (.526), 1st in OPS (.886), 3rd in TB (251).  Made jump from hi A to AA, then 9 games at AAA to end the season.  His cumulative stats might have been higher except he missed three weeks after being hit in the face by a pitch in May.

Ortiz: 4th in runs (91), 1st in hits (153), 3rd in doubles (35), T-3rd in HR (19), 2nd in RBI (85), 9th in BB (55), 2nd in BA (.284), 3rd in SLG (.477), 4th in OPS (.826), 2nd in TB (257).  Spent most of the year in AA but spent several weeks in AAA and didn’t miss a beat.   Also an elite defender at SS.

Cowser: 1st in runs (114), 3rd in hits (142), 2nd in doubles (36), T-3rd in homers (19), 5th in RBI (66), 1st in BB (94), 4th in BA (.278), 1st in OBP (.406), 4th in SLG (.469), 2nd in OPS (.874), 4th in TB (239).  Jumped from Hi A to AA and then spent several weeks in AAA.

It’s very close, but I think I’d vote for them in that order.

Good post.  Thanks for putting all that together.  I figured they might use Gunnar's MLB time as an excuse to add a second player to the POY like they did last year with Rutschman and Stowers.  I think Westburg was definitely the #2 guy in the org last year from a performance standpoint.  Pretty wild that Gunnar wasn't POY or co-POY.  Regardless, congrats to Westburg - well deserved.  By all accounts he is a super hard worker and will be an easy guy to pull for.
