It’s very weird being both a rabid Orioles fan and a Maryland taxpayer.   Anything that keeps the Orioles in Baltimore long term and is financially good for the team is something that benefits me as a fan, but the taxpayer side of me really wants to see the MSA to tell Angelos to go F himself.   Anyway, I suspect a lot of these benefits will enrich the owners but not benefit the baseball team.

Its great being an O's fan and living out of state! No conflict of interest.

As an interesting comparison, Mark Cuban sold a majority share in the Mavericks to Miriam Adelson, of Sands Casino fortune today.

It's a surprising move, as he'd claimed in the past he would never sell the team, but he has been angling to get a new arena, and have it situated in the middle of an "entertainment" complex, complete with sports betting.  The Adelson family would obviously be an ideal partner in such a venture.

Gambling is, of course, illegal in Texas.  A conservative supermajority in the state government, fueled in no small part by evangelical Christians, should be dead set against legalizing gambling.

Who wants to bet Cuban and Adelson will be buying some politicians and gambling will be legal in the state in five years?

The cultural rot and corruption continues unabated.

I think it's more likely Cuban will be one of the politicans within the next five years.  He also left Shark Tank.

LOL.  It's hard to argue with that.

Those people had bases though, or poltical machines.  Cuban has nothing.  Who does he appeal to exactly?

He's got money and name recognition.

He's also getting publicity for taking on the pharmaceutical industry.  (to be honest not sure how that's been going)

Wasn't he adamantly and vehemently pro-vax?  RFK Jr. he's not.

It’s quite possible to be a foe of the pharmaceutical industry and pro-vax.  The former is really about the pricing of drugs, not efficacy.  Not that I’ve followed Cuban’s stance on these issues.

Anyway, back to baseball.

Angelos probably won’t allow them to be decoupled.

Not allowing these matters to be decoupled puts Angelos in a little bit of a pickle then, no? My limited understanding of this issue is that these additional development rights have to be approved by the General Assembly, which does not meet again until January. But the lease needs to be signed by 12/31, lest Angelos and the MSA agree to another short term lease/extension. Not getting a full lease done by 12/31 would be quite the bad look for everyone involved, not that John Angelos seems to give a damn about the veracity of his public statements.

They signaled months ago that they might need to do a short term extension, so I won’t be at all surprised if that happens and I doubt anyone will feel embarrassed about it.  In fact, that’s what I expect to happen.

But a deal is far from finished.

Senior Moore officials and others with knowledge of the specifics of the agreement said Friday they have more work to do before a lease will be signed. Although they still expect to meet the Dec. 31 deadline, an extension until all parties are satisfied is not off the table.

This is from Sept. 29, quoting the Banner.  And I’ve been expecting a short term extension ever since.

I don't know. From my perspective it would be hilariously bad to come out and announce the 30 yr lease being signed on 9/28, only to drag it out to the last days and settle for a short term extension. Just signals to me that Angelos is not dealing in good faith as he pushes for more & more concessions.
