I feel like Basallo should be put under the same scrutiny.  How many of his HR have been against washed up non prospects.  Questionable whether he can even defensively handle catcher.  It's not just throwing base stealers out.  Basallo struggles to keep his OPS above .900 in AA when Holliday obliterated AA at the same age with an OPS over 1.000.  Basallo is far from untouchable.

Totally agree, let's also find things to complain about with our other extremely young and talented prospect! If there's one thing this forum needs more of, in the year 2024 when we are the envy of the entire league, it's complaints.

Basallo AND Holliday are both one of, if not THE youngest players in their respective leagues. Their development (Holliday's especially) is always judged based on WHY ARE THEY NOT IN THE BIG LEAGUES OMG WTF.

But the truth of the matter is, they are excelling against much older professional baseball players. Jackson Holliday is effectively a sophomore in college. Basallo is a 19 year old in AA OPS'ing .813.

Let's pump the brakes a bit on scrutinizing their performances.

Should have said .800 since his OPS is .813.

At this time last year, Holliday was still in Aberdeen on his way to a .940 OPS.   He didn’t get promoted to Bowie until July 14, so your comparison is a bit premature.  🙂

Maybe Basallo’s .894 OPS in June and 1.053 OPS so far in July is a better comp?

when Holliday obliterated AA at the same age with an OPS over 1.000, against the same washed up pitchers that Basallo is having success against. Whats good for the goose. Basallo will put under the same scrutiny As JH when he does what JH did come up and make a mess of it for 3 weeks. Maybe they are both too young. Its a rare talant the can handle MLB at such young age

Basallo has Gary Sánchez's skill set, except from the left side of the plate. Fangraphs

I would like my future catcher's power  to be compared to Sanchez's.  They-re catching abilty not so much.

Similar skill set.  Of course, Gary Sanchez was in AA when he was 21, putting up a .743 OPS.    Our boy Basallo, according to some, is struggling to keep his OPS over .800 at the age of 19.

There are some legit positional questions to be answered with all three of the O's top guys. It's interesting... they can all hit.

Where do they best fit? (Obvious nod to Johnnie Cochran....)

I’d say both Holliday and Basallo are victims of their own early success and people’s tendency to get over-excited by that kind of precociousness.  Both are having very good seasons at the level they’re at, and are way ahead of schedule for players their age, yet people are disappointed that they aren’t rocketing forward at the same pace of acceleration as last year.   Holliday has a 145 wRC+ in AAA at age 20, and Basallo has a 128 wRC+ in AA at age 19.  If they need a little more time to bake at the level they’re at, that’s absolutely fine.

So,laughter and super supportive of Basallo while questioning everything that Holliday does.  Got it. No nit picking whether Basallo is really an elite athlete.

People can’t separate the bad 34 at bats from reality.  Basallo hasn’t had those at bats at this level in front of their face, so it’s different.

No one cares about the 36 ABs. It's the sub-par AAA showing.

But again, he's very young for the level, and will be fine, obviously.

It's just going to be next year for him, that's all. And that's fine! But to simply ignore his performance this year in AAA and act like he's going to be an upgrade this year is just sticking your head in the sand. He needs to show consistent and improved power and hit tool. He's not doing that yet. I think he will next year at 21.

You might not care about the 36 at bats but some people here care a lot.

Wait... what? Maybe I'm misinterpreting here.

You're suggesting that Jackson Holliday's AAA performance has been sub-par?

For a 20-year old, no. It's been fantastic.

For someone angling to get on this 26-man roster this year, yes. It's not enough.

    • I still care about wins. I remember following Palmer and others to get to 20 in the 70s. That's one of the things I miss about baseball from those years when all the starting pitchers would have these big win-loss totals in July and beyond. Fingers was talking yesterday about having an 8-man staff in the playoffs one year. I hope Rodriguez can get to 20.
    • Though there are a lot of outfielders right now I am not sure there will be that many next year.   Santander, Hays and maybe even Mullins may not be on the team.   That leaves Kjerstad probably RF,   Cowser CF depending on if he hits.     Norby, Stowers are probably traded.    Beavers and Fabian are not hitting that well at AA.   They could spend all season next year at AAA.   I could see Mayo at 3B and Westburg in LF.  Not because Westburg isn't a good 3B but because of Mayo, Holliday and Westburg,  I think Westburg would be the best LFer. So I don't really see Kjerstad as expendable.
    • I don’t expect it to happen, but I still always holD out hope for some of the high upside hs bats (Gillen specifically at 22, almost any of them at 32). We really don’t do it, but have really hit when we do (Jackson, Gunnar, Mayo).    id be a bit surprised if Benge is still there, and Honeycutt.
    • While those three SP are pretty good. The Cubs problem is their bullpen but even more so (like much of MLB) their offense. I'm very confident that we will handle them like we do everyone else.
    • I agree trading Kjerstad is borderline.  I suggested a Kjerstad led deal for Crochet.   Two problems.  Some people don’t think that’s enough and I’m still not confident Elias would do it even if it was enough.
    • I understand the sentiment, IMO it's just the wrong situation. Teams that are this good, young, and inexpensive should not cast their lot on "cash considerations" kinds of players. We are arguably the best team in baseball with a very legit shot at a title (first in over 40 years). The waiver wire/players who are DFA's is not the way to go this year. Even if an opportunity arises where a useful player like Aaron Hicks becomes available (like he did last year), it is doubtful that we would be high enough in the peaking order to claim such a player (given how good our record is). I don't think you should ever shut yourself off from any avenue of talent acquisition. But I'm curious why you think "the waiver wire"/"bargain bin"/"cash considerations" is the best way to improve the team?
    • Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, I was just shy of my 24th birthday and I remember it very well.  😀
