Any early word on who's the likely top pick in the 2011 draft? Looks like the O's are going to have a good shot at it, so I wanted to see if at least there's something/someone to look forward to.

Thanks

Four of your likely top five, as of right now:

The only bright side to having the worst record this year, will be the opportunity to draft and sign Rendon. He's the best college hitter I've seen in years. Not only does he hit for average and power, he is an on base machine.

47 BB 15 K's. That eye for the strike zone has to be among the best ever. He's considered a good defender at 3B.

So the O's can claim him. If they can sign him, hopefully he can be our 3B of the future, since it's becoming excrutiatingly evident Josh Bell won't be....

If I am the Orioles I try to strike a trade for a power hitting first baseman soon. Bell, Snyder, Erbe, and Pie is the package I would offer if an extension was offered and accepted.

Forgot I also had Sonny Gray video. He's in the mix, as well.

We can finally pencil in an everyday player and not have to worry about it. Plug him in the 3B position and 3 hole in the lineup every day and worry about the rest of the sqad.

48 walks 15 strikeouts. Something we haven't seen from an Oriole in over 15 years: PLATE DISCIPLINE.

Rendon is the clear favorite -in my view- for the top spot... but I'd actually be a bit surprised if we get to pick first. Yes, despite the horrid start to the season.
Greg, I love reading your input, but I have to disagree with you here... we already have a 4 game lead on the next closest team for the #1 draft pick (sad, I know), and with the next 11 being against Boston and New York, we could very easily be off to a 2-26 start to this season. The team is already starting to shut it down...it's getting depressing.

They can only be that bad if the starting pitching collapses. So far that hasn't happened. In fact, the SP has been pretty good, and if it continues that way, they'll probably end up with no better than the #3 or #4 pick.

OTOH, if they actually do hit 2-26, then I'll agree, they have a good shot at Rendon.

Love Rendon, but it would be a great story to see him go to hometown Houston.

But I'm forced to admit, with the next 11 games against Boston and NY, 3-25 seems quite likely. Roberts, Pie are out for a while. Reimold and Tejada are banged up. Atkins is beyond atrocious. Wieters is a singles hitter. The bullpen is as bad as ever. AND I bet we trade Millwood/Guthrie to a contender at the trade deadline.

If we finish with the 2nd or 3rd worst record, I'm going to be pissed. We lose just enough games every year to miss out on the top tier talent and get stuck with crapshoots that don't pan out like Rowell and Snyder. For once, let's just stink enough to get ourselves a sure thing stud!

Way too early to call Brandon Snyder "a crapshoot that doesn't pan out"...
