Rosenthal says deal done Jimenez (4/$50M - Official)

They could have had Matt Garza, who is a better pitcher and has pitched in the AL East, for the same kind of contract. I just don't get it.

Some teams were worried about Garza's arm. And if there were multiple teams concerned about it, I am fairly certain that we were one of them.

If the numbers reported are accurate, the Orioles have given Jimenez $2 million more per year than the Astros gave Feldman. Yes, it's for one additional year, but Feldman is also a year older than Ubaldo. Which would you rather have?

If true, this deal is nothing short of a coup for the Orioles in light of Ubaldo's upside. And people need to remember that Garza likely signed in this neighborhood (money-wise) due to concerns about his long-term health. A worry-free Garza probably would have commanded much more...and with guys at the "top" of the market signing deals that the Orioles wouldn't touch, getting a guy with "ace" potential for $12 million a year is rather astonishing.

Maybe it doesn't work out, and maybe the guys who get drafted in the 15-20 slots all turn into future all-stars, but at least moves like this signal the Orioles' willingness to compete during their current, competitive window.

Of course, he's hoping there's enough payroll room left over for Davis (whether in terms of an extension, or a FA contract)...especially if Hardy is extended first.

Hopefully this move will dispel any thoughts that Davis had about the Orioles not trying to win.

Gotta love his willingness to play in the AL East. Can't wait for Buck's low key take on things. Everyone slots back and guys like Gausman, Yoon, Aceves, Britton and Johnson are that much further from starting in April. By midseason, we hope for Tillman, Gausman, Bundy, Jimenez and maybe Chen or Gonzalez. Just a real solid move on a bunch of levels.

Isn't that ridiculous? I mean, good for Feldman, but that's a little nuts.

This. He was terrible in Cleveland until the second half of last year (where he was phenomenal). I don't feel good about this. Giving up a draft pick for him plus four years seems like a bad idea to me.

Breakdown by month in 2013:

March/April: 7.13 ERA, 1.333 WHIP

May: 4.23 ERA, 1.373 WHIP

June: 3.09 ERA, 1.625 WHIP

July: 2.83 ERA, 1.360 WHIP

August: 3.10 ERA, 1.379 WHIP

September: 1.09 ERA, 1.016 WHIP

Do you think Saunders would pitch for free? He is going to want 6 million a year. So you save 6 million and keep your pick. I myself would rather have a good player and spend the extra 6 a year.

Oy, I guess I have to walk you through this.

Saunders could be had for a 1- or 2- year deal. The $24 million we now owe Jimenez in 2016/2017 gets us halfway to what, say, Chris Davis will command. Of course, a potential massive Davis or Wieters contract could blow up in our face as well. But FA pitchers are just a crazy roll of the dice.

I'm not saying it's going to happen or would even be a good idea. But let's say hypothetically we sign Santana and then Morales, (or Morales and Santana) what would the host team of the third signing, get in terms of picks? Where would that take us in terms of payroll? +130M? And more importantly, would getting one or both of them do for us in terms of projected wins/loses? Not advocating the above, just thinking out loud.
