Sherrill to...Cubs?

Did you not see the part immediately after that where I said I wasn't comparing their trade value? I was trying to make a point. Apparently a point that you missed. Just forget it.

No I did read it ...He's a relief pitcher. And has a long way to go to be Lee Smith.

Unfortunately, there is a selection bias whenever you look at a LOOGY's stats against right-handers because managers pull LOOGY's against the best right handed hitters.

That's a valid point, although in 2007 George Sherrill faced Derrek Lee, Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada (and retired all three).

And I'll concede that many of the righthanded at-bats came against switch-hitters.

He's a starter who came out of the pen last year because our rotation was full.

Grab him, convert him back into a starter (a la Wainright), and he's your ace already.

I wasn't down playing him ... Obvious the O's front office sees real value in Sherrill for some unknown reason. I was just suggesting if Mcphail said I'll give Roberts & Sherrill, & in return you give me Murton, Gallagher, & Marmol. Hendry & Pinella seem to want Roberts bad enough to make that deal. I'm not saying you , Skiba7 or Rob would like it. Just my opinion.

Piniella fell in love with using Marmol last yr. He was the ONLY guy he would call on to pitch the most critical situations in a game (1st/3rd nobody out....bases loaded...tie game...1 out, for example). I doubt Piniella is willing to sacrifice Marmol to get Roberts.

I wouldn't mind Sherrill, (or Walker) but they are NOT must haves for the Cubs. I personally think, Carmen Pignatiello can do the job, without too much problems. So the idea of Sherrill holding up both Bedard and Roberts trades....is pretty much a stretch, IMO.

Agreed ...but not impossible

Let's add a slight twist and keep map out this entire thing...

Bedard to M's for Jones, Sherrill, Tillman, Butler, and Mickilio

Marmol > Walker (true)

Proposed trade Pie Gallagher and Marshall for BRob and Payton

Pie Gallagher and Marmol for BRob, Walker, Payton, and Mickilio

Trade Pie for Triunfel and Chen

Final look:

O's trade Bedard, Walker, BRob, Payton

and receive Jones, Sherrill, Tillman, Butler, Triunfel, Chen, Marmol, Gallagher

Seattle trades Jones, Sherrill, Tillman, Butler, Mickilio, Chen, Triunfel

and receives Bedard and Pie

Cubs trade Marmol, Gallagher, Pie

and receive BRob, Payton, Walker, Mickilio

The only thing is, I might be overvaluing Pie here, in which case we probably couldn't get Chen with Triunfel. Also, to those who say that Marmol definitely wouldn't go in that trade, I'd say you might be right, but there is also a possibility that you'd be wrong. Marmol would be the only somewhat proven player that we would be asking for in return for an AS 2bman, a very good Left-handed setup man, a fourth OFer, and a promising (but unrefined) arm. I feel like that is not a bad trade for your team. And not a bad trade for ours, either.

In 2007, George Sherrill apparently faced righthanded batters in 60 of his 73 appearances. Righthanded batters hit .212 against Sherrill in 66 official at-bats while lefthanded batters hit .156 in 90 official at-bats.

In contrast, Jamie Walker in 2007 faced righthanded batters in 76 of his 81 appearances. Righthanded batters hit .268 against Walker in 123 official at-bats while lefthanded hitters hit .216 in 111 official at-bats.

I hope that provides some perspective.

It does provide some perspective.

The fact that he pitches in many more games than innings tells you he is not a setup man, he is a lefty specialist who had good numbers against righties. Not denying that. A setup man would normally pitch one and two inning segments if he were an A level setup man. Sherill is 30 and for the last two years he has pitched in many more games than he has full innings pitched. So projecting those numbers to a good setup man and even closer is difficult to do.

Not saying you can not do that with him. It is just that you can not get that kind of trade value (Marmol) for a guy who is 30, that has not done it yet, but for whom you have to project it for.

Does that make sense?

Marmol, Gallagher, and Pie for Roberts and spare parts?

Uh, no.

Yeah, I don't see this happening either. I think that if the O's want to get Marmol in the Roberts trade, they'll have to forget about Pie, which I'm fine with if we get Adam Jones. Marmol, Gallagher and another prospect or 2 for Roberts and Sherill. It's much more reasonable w/o Pie in it, and it's more effective for the O's as far as filling holes in the organization. I have a feeling that the only stockpiling of one position that AM is interested in is pitching.

Is it possible that the O's convert Jones back to his original position, SS, and make Pie the everyday CFer? Doubtful but if we are being all mad scientist-like!;)

I don't see it happening. Jones will be a gold glove caliber defender in center, and he's major league ready at the position. If he switches back to SS, he's got another year or two of development in the minors.
