* Major props to reliever Darren O’Day for using “egregious” and “petulant” in yesterday’s postgame interview. This guy is special.

* Former reliever Grant Balfour threw out the ceremonial first pitch yesterday before the Rays-Athletics game at Tropicana Field. He closed for both teams in the past, so it seemed like an appropriate gesture.

No word on whether Rays physician Dr. Koco Eaton checked Balfour’s medicals again and ripped other teams for not letting him throw out the first pitch.

"Any discussion of Cy Young Award candidates in the American League must include Orioles closer Zach Britton. To omit him would be like forgetting to wear pants.

OK, that’s probably a poor analogy. There are no laws against omitting Britton. It would be a mistake, but not indecent. You’d be exposing yourself in a completely different way."

Triggs is making his second major league start. He allowed one run and three hits in three innings against the Angels on June 18. He also replaced an injured Rich Hill in the first inning of a July 17 game against the Blue Jays, pitched one inning and was nailed on the shin by a comebacker.

Maybe the Orioles can solve him. Maybe a few of them received A’s in ... wait for it ... Triggonometry.

I can’t remember the last time that I missed a series at Yankee Stadium, but my daughter is getting married this weekend and she wouldn’t go along with my “train back and forth” idea. MASNsports.com colleague Steve Melewski will be with the team if he doesn’t get lost in Queens. Those subways go in both directions.
