Orioles win; Yankees lose

Last night's NYY loss was especially disheartening, not just because it was to the Phillies and came despite scoring six runs. The Yankees staked Sabathia to a 3-1 lead in the third, but he couldn't hold it. (The Yankees are facing a problem of what to do with CC similar to the Orioles' issues was Tillman, but different in that the most logical reason for CC's ineffectiveness is that, at age 34, he's done unless he can re-invent himself.) They fell behind 6-3, then fought back to tie the game, but twice failed to score runners from third and one out, going 1 for 12 with RISP for the game.

With a tie game, the Yanks brought in Betances in the eighth to get five outs, underscoring the importance of the game. He was hit hit hard, threw 27 pitches, and couldn't finish. The big hit was Maikel Franco's smash down the third-base line off Betances that ate up former NL gold glover Chase Headley (who earlier in the game made his 16th error of the season).

Teixeira has missed the last two games with neck pains, and his return is uncertain. This afternoon, the Yankees try to avoid a sweep with Nova going against Hamels.

Interesting to see that. Most of those errors had been throwing (hope it reminds Y's fans of Chuck Knoblach) and so if he's screwing up w the glove too the Yankees have a real problem--a Headly case!

(JULY 5th)

Although the Orioles won and the Yankees lost today, it was a disappointing weekend overall.

Aside from the fact that the Orioles' lack of offense cost them a chance to take at least 2 out of 3 games from the White Sox, the Rays blew Friday's game TWICE, and then lost again on Saturday after tying the game in the 9th inning.

Friday was particularly galling. Led by 6.67 innings of shutout ball pitched by Chris Archer, the Rays took a 3-0 lead into the 8th inning. They allowed the Yankees to tie it on a 3-run home run by Mark Teixeira. Then after the Rays scored 2 runs in the top of the 12th to take a 5-3 lead, Brian McCann hit a 3-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to give the Yankees a 7-5 win.
