Also, this one is interesting as well

5. Trevor Cahill, RHP, Cubs — Cahill had a chance to sign with the Pirates or Orioles as a starter or reliever, but opted to stay in Chicago, where he’ll be strictly a reliever. Cahill loves being with the Cubs and didn’t want to leave after he reinvented himself following a bad stint with the Braves.

Can you blame him? Besides, Joe Maddon is a magnet.

Absolutely no desire for long term, expensive commitments that may include loss of a high draft pick for anyone with "< 6 K/9" attached to their name in 2016. I'd rather put Wright in the rotation next year than sign Gallardo or Leake.

Exactly. K/9 rate has crashed from 9 in 2011 to 5.9 in 2015, and his average fastball velocity has dropped from 92.7 in 2011 to 90.4 in 2015. His average curveball velocity has also dropped 2 mph since 2011, suggesting more loop and less bite.

A long term contract for a pitcher on the wrong side of 30, with declining K rates and velocity, and that would cost the 14th overall pick?? No thanks. I'd rather throw in a 4th year and overpay for Kazmir; which is DD's punishment for trading away all those young, cheap, controllable pitchers.

So you think Dan will be here in 2020?

By the Way. Chris Lee is young controllable and left handed. He makes up for one of them. Maybe Joe Gunkel too. Possibly even Ariel Miranda.

I agree with you on Lee, but not sure about Gunkel and Miranda. Would you prefer Gunkel/Miranda over EdRod, Davies, Hader, Tarpley, Brault?

My kid Nate is young, cost-controlled, and left-handed, so he's got that in common with the folks you mention. The attribute we forgot was "good".
