Do you think he pretty immediately will be more successful than some of the pitchers currently in our rotation?  They’ve been on a pretty good roll, 3.06 ERA since June 16 over 28 games.

I think he's more likely to be successful than Voth & Watkins, arguably Kremer over the next 2 months.

But for me it's more about finding that out anything else.

Nevin & Arrauz are not getting consistent playing time. To me, both are placeholders as this point for guys like Henderson, Vevra, and Westburg.

Call me crazy, but I like Odor as a bench guy. He's someone who can pinch hit late in games.

I don't think Mateo is an everyday player. Yes, he's a plus defender and a base stealer but you can't steal first base. He reminds me a lot of Billy Hamiliton in that regard.

Nevin and Arrauz are place holders, but I think they're presently placeholders while we see how the next 10 days go and if we're still "in it".  If we are still "in it", I think we could Nevin/Arrauz replaced for vet bench player types and not big time prospects.  Think about like a Michael Bourn and Danny Valencia/Renato Nunez types.

Let's just hope we don't get buried in these next 7 against NYY and TB.

Some consideration needs to be made as to when the projected stars will reach arbitration and free agency.  If we're looking at sustainable success, the Orioles likely won't be able to afford all of them hitting those marks at the same time AND increase payroll to add impact free agents.   Right now I would consider those stars to be Adley, Gunnar, GRod, Holliday.  Barring a top two rookie of the year placement, waiting on Gunnar and GRod until ~ May 2023 would space out the arbitration and FA a bit.  With a possible exception for Gunnar if the O's are in wild card contention in mid-August, a la Manny in 2012.

I don't think Mateo goes back to San Diego, but I would hope the O's would be open to such a deal.

Mateo is the kind of player who has a lot of value to a playoff team.  His speed and defense can singlehandedly win a game.  I'm not sure he will ever be a replacement level batter.   Would there be enough value to trade him.  Seems like an addon to a bigger trade.  Probably makes more sense to keep him and gradually transition him to a utility role.

Addressing a few issues brought up in this thread:

1) If Hall is shut down I would think Elias would option him so he is not accruing  service time and is not paid an MLB salary while he is shut down.

However, that is not what I think they will do with Hall.   I think they will have him start 5 or 6 games getting 5 inning per start.   Then they would use him as a two inning opener every 5th  or 6th day to cut down the stress on his arm.   If he does that 6 or 7 times he will add another 12 or 14 innings which should not be a problem.   I don't think 100 innings is written in stone.

2) If Mateo is hitting well he is the best SS the O's have. A better  SS than Gunnar or Westburg.   He would be part of a winning formula.   I think many posters underestimate how much Mateo defense contributes to the O's winning.

The question is can he hit well in the majors.  And we don't know yet.  He has improved his hitting in July but there is not enough data to be conclusive.

3) I agree with SG that Elias should not play service time games with key O's players in April next year.   The O's 7-14 start this year in April should be proof to Elias that if he wants to contend he has to put his best players on the field to win from the beginning of the season.

Odor isn't going anywhere.  HIs energy and leadership have more than enough value to keep him around.

Odor's fun, but I'm ripping that band aid off real fast. If you want to make him a bench bat, fine, but I don't think he really fits on a 26 man roster.

You gotta cross that bridge when you get there. If the Orioles are legitimate contenders then the payroll can get pretty high as we’ve seen during the Buck years. If the Orioles want sustained success then they’ll also have to operate similarly to the Rays…meaning you trade the expensive guys once they get expensive.

He has no business getting the playing time he is.  If there is room to keep him for off the field stuff, that’s fine but he’s not nearly good enough to stop you from replacing him.

He has legitimately won or tied three games for the team with clutch hits.  I am not saying he should be the starter, but the guy is worthy of a roster spot given that reportedly he is great in the clubhouse etc....

People keep saying that but it’s funny how they ignore his overall terrible numbers an below average defense.  How many games has that cost us?

He can stay..maybe.  Right now I guess he can.  But if he gets pushed the bench for pinch hitting and spot starts, so be it.  He’s not good.

Hard to argue. I'm ready for Hall in the majors for sure.

Could add Westburg up for Nevin or Odor.

Will need to wait a little longer for Stowers, I'd guess. Same for Henderson, though I know people are saying he and Westburg are tied together.

Odor isn’t going anywhere unless he’s dealt

How much if any will the new roy draft pic compensation impact Henderson being called up? What’s the date he could be called up this year and still be eligible for roy next year?

Rookie eligible is 45 days in the majors  during April to August or 130 at bats.   As long as he does not meet  either of those criteria he will be considered a rookie next year.

With his arm and speed, would it be possible to teach Mateo how to play some outfield?  This would expand his usefulness to a team and increase his ability to stay in the field.

    • I used to think we had a plethora of outfielders ready to replace the current guys, but not I'm not sure. Cowser is one. Does the FO trust Stowers? Heston is another as far as his bat goes, but how bad is the defense if you have Stowers, Cowser and Heston? How long before Bradfield is ready? Will Norby or Mayo move to the OF? Does that make it any better. If Santander has his typical year, I would give him the QO. So what if you have to pay him large for one year? It's not like our payroll is high right now.
    • Or maybe he just is hesitant because he knows it’s best to give up a single than letting it get by you for a triple or inside the park homerun. I highly doubt Cowser gives a crap about WAR. There is nothing in the guy’s demeanor, personality, or anything that suggests he chases stats and places himself above the team. To say otherwise is quite ridiculous at best, and malicious at worst. He is a rookie and he will get more comfortable as he plays. With that comfortability will come trusting his ability more and more. Why even suggest a thing like you are suggesting? Just pathetic quite frankly on your part.
    • On the spot?  Maybe.   Even at full health, people would have accepted not winning the division because of the pace the Yankees are on.   We have a comfortable lead for the WC so if the Orioles can continue winning at a reasonable pace with Burnes/GRod/Kremer/Irvin/Povich/Suarez.   As far as the playoffs go, there’s only a few starters that inspire confidence in a playoff series that will be available.   Elias isn’t trading Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo.  He just isn’t.   He can get relievers without giving up top prospects.  The question is, can he get someone like Crochet without giving up those top 3?   Crochet, despite innings concerns, gives you a playoff starter plus someone who’ll be here after Burnes is gone. However, Crochet is an A.J. Preller type of move, not an Elias type of move.   If Povich looks the part of a ML starter AND no more starters go down, I could see Elias standing pat on the starters and fortifying the back end of the bullpen.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after the fourth round. San Diego Padres Compensation for Josh Hader. The Astros forfeited their second-round pick for signing Hader. San Diego Padres Compensation for Blake Snell. The Giants forfeited their third-round pick for signing Snell. Toronto Blue Jays Compensation for Matt Chapman. The Giants forfeited their second-round pick for signing Chapman.

The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.

    • The answer appears to be, yes, you can receive more than one compensation picks.
