This kind of contract happens when an owner fires his GM and decides he can Steinbrenner or Moreno his way through.

George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees from 1973 - 2010. The team had 7 World Series appearances producing 5 Titles.

Jim Crane, owner of the Houston Astros since 2011. The team has had 4 World Series appearances producing 2 Titles.

Peter Angelos, owner of the Orioles since 1993.  Zero World Series appearances.

I was one of them and I feel no regret whatsoever.

Cruz violated every known law of player progression and regression for some "mysterious" reason.

It was downright Bondsian one might say 😉

I argued then that professional hitters like Cruz and Ortiz and Harold Baines etc etc usually keep hitting into 40s.
All you needed him for was to hit and these guys continue much longer than a position player would.. I was right.. Duquette was wrong.
I would have done the same with Abreu.

It is a risk I would take every time  with DHs who have been productive.

If the Orioles had truly wanted Abreu they could have certainly outbid them.  They did not want him.  But the Os are masters  at the token offseason bid.

Maybe Elias was too smart to give Abreu a third year.  Sounds like a smart non-move to me.

Are you suggesting they made some token bid for Abreu?  I have not heard that they made any bid at all.

Not a good idea for the O's to pay a very good but not great DH $20 mill/yr.  If I'm paying $20 mill/yr for a DH I want Big Pappy/early peak JD Martinez production.

I don't think it was the 20m/yr.  I think it was the third year.   And that the Astros could offer Abreu to play 1B instead of DH.

Come talk to me after the third year.  Right now I will predict he will provide over value in years 36,37 and 38.. and very well may through another deal.  Astros not known for being dumb.
