Just now, Tony-OH said:

The Orioles would burn the DH had they pinched hit for McCann. McCann hit the ball hard and it was almost a double.

Then burn the DH. The second night in a row that McCann comes up in a big spot and we’re stuck because god forbid we lose the DH. So many things wrong with this. Stop playing McCann so much. If you insist on playing him so much, then just bring up a third catcher. The roster configuration is confusing.

I think the Orioles are the most talented team in the AL, or close to it. Maybe the Phillies or the Dodgers have more talent. Elias deserves credit for assembling that talent.

But the Orioles' talent doesn't translate efficient into a winning baseball team. The half of the team that consists of position players is pretty strong., with lots and lots of power and good defense.  The half of the roster that's composed of pitching is not very good. Part of that injuries, but should anyone be surprised that pitchers break during the season? There are other factors within the Orioles' control: not drafting pitchers early in the draft, getting no contribution from international free agent pitchers signed and developed by the Orioles, unwillingness to trade any of those stockpiled position-player prospects, signing highly-paid veterans only as rentals. Elias deserves the blame for the weakness of the pitching portion of the roster.

The situation is a little worse than that. Kremer will return, but it's likely there will be more injuries. Unlike other top teams, the Orioles don's have a cast of hard throwers in their system with a reasonable chance to get ML hitters out. The reasons, I believe, are exactly the ones I mentioned above.

The result is that the Orioles probably go into the roughly 60 percent of games not started by Burnes or GRod thinking they're going to have to score a bunch of runs to win. That's a tough way to play a full season of baseball.
