Cardinals open to trading Sonny Gray

 Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years.

A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing.

It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .

Gray is actually due $65M. $25M next year, $35M in 2026, and a $5M buyout on a $30M mutual option in 2027. Plus he has a no trade clause

Not really any surplus value there. He could be worth close to 2/$65M, but pretty much no way he exceeds it. Doubt I would give up more than a bag of balls if they had to take on the whole contract.

Rather sign Pivetta. Probably costs less and you don’t have to give up talent. 

But if you get Gray cheaply and they eat some contract, he could be a plan c or d type guy.

Interesting option if they go the trade route. I tend to doubt they do another SP trade this winter, but maybe this is an option for a relatively low prospect price, if it's within Rubenstein's budget.

With all the pitching injuries these days a 35 year old starter making $25 million and then $35 million scares the crap out of me. If I'm dipping that deep into my purse I'd rather just sign 32 year old Blake Snell in the off season.

Ya forgot about Snell. Definitely agree he might be the best investment of all of them

Gray started off well  but then ran out of steam a bit. He's not getting any younger. I was interested in him last year but I think the Cardinals overpaid and his contract only gets worse.

It sounds like the Diamondbacks aren't that interested in their relationship with Jordan Montgomery, who has a $22.5M player option for 2025 he figures to exercise.

Elias would have to negotiate one of those James McCann buy-side things, but it sounds like Ken Kendrick, at the very least, isn't worried if the player will be a happy camper as a 2025 Diamondback.

I thought I read last winter when Gray went fast to St. Louis - in his mind it was his last contract for a team he always wanted to play for.

This team needs to stop giving up prospect capital for arms that they can acquire via FA.

Agreed with you . We spent quite a bit of prospects this past deadline . It’s time to balance that by making investments in FA market .
