It is absolutely to the Orioles’ advantage to have the top guys thinking that the O’s don’t have a clear preference at no. 1. They don’t want their top choice thinking the O’s are so desperate to take him that they’ll pay any price.  It’s Negotiation 101.   Now, do the O’s actually have a clear preference at no. 1?   I have no idea, and we may never know.   We certainly won’t know until after the pick is made, if then.

Whoever they take will be said to be their numero uno Choice.  Book it!

That's why I think Termarr in OPACY made the news.  And maybe a message to the others who also had a workout but not headlines.  (Of course, my tin foil hat may need an adjustment as well...)

Correct.  You usually don't find out about these things until after the draft.   Interesting that they weren't too secretive about this one.

Ok. I stole it from you.  Haha.   I don't remember that comment but great minds think alike.   When I looked at your post I thought it was DocJJ who said it.

Understandable, the way the quotes from other threads format.   I love the comp, though obviously it’s about 99% unlikely that Johnson will turn out as well as Morgan.  But it shows that being short and being a 2B can be overcome if the guy truly can hit like everyone says he can.   And I really like everything I’ve read about his personality and love of baseball.

I’m going into the draft with an open mind.   The options at the top of the draft look really good.   We won’t know for years who turns out best, but I think there’s a really good chance that there will be several all star level players who emerge from the top 5 this year.   As Elias has said, it’s a good year to be picking no. 1.

It goes into the whole ridiculous expectations for prospects thing.

OMG!   He bats LH.  He's short.  He's got power.  He plays 2B.   Joe Morgan.    Unreasonable expectations?   That's what the whole draft is about in every sport.   Every player is great until they step on the field and have to play against stronger competition than they've ever played against before.    The draft is about dreaming on guys.   Just read the reports on Johnson.   One scout called him a cross between Wade Boggs (plate discipline) and Vladimir Guerrero (bat to ball skills).   Crazy stuff but no one really expects anything like that.    If you read the press clippings on Johnson he's a .300 hitter with plate discipline, who can hit 25-30 homers a year, and play an average or better 2B.   Except for the stolen bases, that's Joe Effin Morgan!!!!    lol

We have Westburg & Henderson at Norfolk. We need a premium SS. Mateo is great defensively but longer term…..

We should just be taking the best overall player, and we can't really be looking at a hole at SS that may or may not exist in 2 or 3 years. Henderson may turn out to be a good SS for a few years, or maybe Joey Ortiz's bat develops so that he's our SS. Or maybe we sign a SS in free agency.

Maybe Jackson Holliday turns out to be the best overall player in Elias' eyes. He'd fit the bill positionally. But I don't want to pass on Collier if he's the best overall hitter/player just because he doesn't play SS.

Will Elias give more power/control to his assistants this year.  He sounded overwhelmed last year when talking about the draft and trade deadline being so close together.  I would be surprised if Elias is going to sleep more than 2 hours a night in July.  Elias seems like a control freak like Buck, where Buck was watching minor league games on his off days.  It sounded great at the time, but maybe he wasn't focusing on what was most important-the major league team.

I don’t think we have much insight into how Elias runs the draft — I.e., is he the one making all the final calls?    He certainly seems to be more heavily involved in hands-on evaluation than Duquette, MacPhail and their predecessors.  He has made the same comment this year about the downsides of having the draft and trade deadline so close together, but not just in reference to himself, but the whole staff.

HS #1 overall picks that did not do as well as predicted (even though some were sort of ok...) in past 25 years:

Delmon Young (although he sure had an all-time great Oriole hit!)

Tim Beckham

Dansby Swanson (although he's doing well this year!)

Matt Bush (worst 1st pick ever, taken 1 pick in front of Justin Verlander).

Mickey Moniak - still early, but looking like a bust

Brady Aiken- another good option for worst 1st ever

There is an element of luck that can't be dismissed.   Let's pray to the baseball gods this year that whoever the O's take will be a stud!

Dansby Swanson was very much not a 1-1 pick out of HS. He went to Vandy and won Most outstanding Player in the CWS.

    • Gibson signed very early in the offseason and was never really a true option of being brought back by Elias and co. If you want to go with someone they could have actually signed for depth then Michael Lorenzen would of made sense as a swingman as he had to wait forever to finally get a deal and it was a bargain for Texas at 4mill. Even then, would he have been fine signing here as a non guaranteed starter; hard to say but don’t think there was any attempt on the O’s to do so.
    • The Britton trade allowed the Yankees to trade some guys that would have been subjected to the 40 man crunch (Tate for example).
    • You can get Pit/PA here. Scroll down to the Team Pitches Batting section and sort by Pit/PA. Lots of good stuff on that page.
    • It will be interesting to see if a small July trade occurs in the style of the Rays or Dodgers with stuffed 40-man rosters. Michael Busch and Bryan Hudson having been guys the Dodgers moved along last winter for off 40 man types is a level  no one else is at, but if Orioles PD success rate stays high they may get closer than most of the other 29 clubs.    How many real keepers are on Delmarva right now?     How many of McDermott, Young, Johnson, Bright, De Leon, Baumeister, Forret, etc. become full time Orioles?
    • It’s a good trade deadline question. It’s not super common, but looking ahead at 40-man roster crunch does affect the prospects who become available for teams with really deep 40-man rosters and strong upper level minors systems. For example, it almost certainly played a role in the Rays trading Seth Johnson. More recently, the Dodgers had some 40-man crunch this off-season and that motivated a handful of trades.  However, I don’t think the Orioles are to that point. They still have enough 40-man space for the prospects who will clearly need to be added.
    • Correct.  I was never a big Mountcastle guy but I didn’t, to the best of my knowledge, say he wouldn’t make it, just that he wouldn’t be an 800-900 OPS type of guy.  Mountcastle’s hit tool (.293 minor league avg) has allowed him to overcome his chase tendencies.  Stowers (.263 minor league avg), I don’t believe, has as good a hit tool.  He’s going to have to hit 25+ homers, minimum, to be a .780 hitter.   He’s capable of it.  I’m just not as confident about it as you are.  I think he’s looked good both ways.
    • Interesting.. I wonder if he could improve a bit by switching to a more aggressive approach, similar to the evolution Gunnar made last year.
