My answer was “neither one,” at least not now.

Generally, I was always under the impression that you should not trade an everyday star player for a starting pitcher. Especially not a star who is under control for five more years. That said, if we get to arb 2 year with no hope in sight for an extension or re-signing him, then yes.

Pitchers break too easily. Strider might be a very durable guy, however, because of his mechanics and strong lower half. I could see an argument for him, but Kirby is kinda slight of build.

I wouldn't do it just cause I absolutely love Gunnar and the TJ risk with any pitcher. I think it's a great question though. Holliday for Strider would be extremely tempting.

I love Gunnar too I just see all the depth behind him and think it would work out. I voted for Strider and
Kirby btw.

For what it's worth, Spencer Strider is the highest ranked pitcher on Fangraphs trade value list and he's below Gunnar.  I think Strider is the only one where you think about it, and it wouldn't be homer-ism to say neither.

I agree that Holliday for Strider or Kirby is a closer comparison.

Not saying I'd make the deal but this is a bizarre argument.

The goal is to win the World Series not collect guys that played here for six seasons of a HoF career.

Edit-In hindsight I would have traded Manny in 2014 for a ring and a TOR pitcher.

Kirby vs Strider was an awesome World Series matchup this year

I can see the need for a new acronym: TINSTATFAR (There Is No Such Thing As Trading For A Ring.)

My first instinct was that somebody'd have to be barking mad to trade Gunnar for either of those pitchers.  But then I thought about how good a Henderson-less infield would still be (Mayo 3B, Holliday SS, Westburg 2B), plus what adding a Spencer Strider to the rotation for the next five years would mean to our future.

I'd pull the trigger for Strider no problem.

I would trade Henderson for Strider I believe. I think there's enough talent behind him to kinda make up for moving him. I also think a pitcher like Strider in addition to Bradish and Rodriguez would put the team in the best position to potentially get a WS banner.

    • I just got power on in Savannah, I hope those we have not heard from are well.
    • I think the point about Gunnar being left handed does swing this in his favor, if it’s an Os specific question. No sense in having your main stud player hitting warning track lasers that would be HRs in 29 other ballparks, over and over again. We may find out exactly how frustrating that is when it comes to Mayo the next couple years  Hopefully we find out! As for the speed, Witt is of course faster. But Gunnar had 20+ stolen bases himself this year. Not like he’s slogging around out there. And Gunnar is a fantastic baserunner overall   I think the defense is closer than people think too. Easy to be biased negatively because Gunnar struggled for a bit there. But there’s a reason we were all so surprised by that - he’s been rock solid otherwise.    Lastly if we had Witt, we wouldn’t have Adley.  Which still matters despite his tough second half. That element (which I realize isn’t necessarily part of the question) makes it a complete no-brainer.
    • I'm sure they had to hold a certain number of decent seats back for MLB and corporate sponsors for the playoffs.
    • Maybe a groundball back to Cano.
    • They've upped the prices back to $77. They've also opened up a lot more sections for purchase. I found this very frustrating when I went to a game a few weeks ago. Many sections appeared sold out and then they added seats for purchase a couple of weeks before the game. Perhaps it has to do with season ticket holders deciding to not go to the game and then the tickets become available?
    • I reckon it’s because Bowman is a contact guy. I know his strikeout rate was 8 with the O’s, but historically he’s been more of a 7 SO/9, so Selby does bring more of the strikeout potential. Although, ideally, you don’t want either of those guys pitching in the playoffs. But hey, maybe Selby ends up being That Guy for us.
    • I know you know, but we gotta adjust from just to cover innings over 162 to playoff time. We won’t need more than Burnes, Eflin, Coloumbe, Cano, and Dominguez. Maybe one of Akin/Perez.
