I have serious doubts that Varva would have been able to provide the requisite launch angle to do that given his in ability to handle Major League velo up in the zone.

Did you watch the majority of his MLB ABs? Pitchers consistently attack him at this level up in the zone because he offers no power threat whatsoever. And I'm not just talking about home runs, I'm talking about exit velo/the ability to drive/hit a baseball hard.

Well first off, I’m not necessarily advocating that he could’ve done so, just that that’s what meant by bat control.

For second, hell, a double play could’ve worked with the run scoring on the DP.  His 2022 K% and BB% put him at less likely to just strike out there uselessly. Even if it is just a DP.  A softly hit ground ball likely results in a  DP that allows the run to score. Bat control.

Lastly, in only 109 PA’s in 2022, he managed at least a few sac flies (the first of which is on an up in the zone 93.6 MPH sinker):

So now he should be up based on his ability to hit into a ground ball DP? are you being serious or are you just trolling

Thanks for the two options, but I’ll go ahead and go with C, none of the above and that you’re missing my point.

He asked what bat control means. I answered the question.

I always liked Vavra. Them moving LF fence back hurt his defensive value. He’s a great piece to have in the organization in case of injury. His arm was never great prior to injury. I would have much rather him hit in Hays spot last night with bases loaded.

What saves Urias is his ability to play 3B and give Westburg some time off. Vavra has played 5 games at 3B at Norfolk without an error and Nick Maton 8 without an error.

If Urias goes, Maton would probably have first shot at replacing him though it's clear they are trying to see if Vavra can play 3B effectively.

Interesting! I know the knock on him was his arm (which, for 2B was particularly glaring), but maybe post shoulder surgery his arm is doing better?

  • 2 weeks later...

From Roch:

“Triple-A Norfolk infielder Terrin Vavra had another health setback. He’s going on the injured list with a left groin strain.”

Poor Vavra makes David Segui look like Cal Ripken Jr.

    • I just got power on in Savannah, I hope those we have not heard from are well.
    • I think the point about Gunnar being left handed does swing this in his favor, if it’s an Os specific question. No sense in having your main stud player hitting warning track lasers that would be HRs in 29 other ballparks, over and over again. We may find out exactly how frustrating that is when it comes to Mayo the next couple years  Hopefully we find out! As for the speed, Witt is of course faster. But Gunnar had 20+ stolen bases himself this year. Not like he’s slogging around out there. And Gunnar is a fantastic baserunner overall   I think the defense is closer than people think too. Easy to be biased negatively because Gunnar struggled for a bit there. But there’s a reason we were all so surprised by that - he’s been rock solid otherwise.    Lastly if we had Witt, we wouldn’t have Adley.  Which still matters despite his tough second half. That element (which I realize isn’t necessarily part of the question) makes it a complete no-brainer.
    • I'm sure they had to hold a certain number of decent seats back for MLB and corporate sponsors for the playoffs.
    • Maybe a groundball back to Cano.
    • They've upped the prices back to $77. They've also opened up a lot more sections for purchase. I found this very frustrating when I went to a game a few weeks ago. Many sections appeared sold out and then they added seats for purchase a couple of weeks before the game. Perhaps it has to do with season ticket holders deciding to not go to the game and then the tickets become available?
    • I reckon it’s because Bowman is a contact guy. I know his strikeout rate was 8 with the O’s, but historically he’s been more of a 7 SO/9, so Selby does bring more of the strikeout potential. Although, ideally, you don’t want either of those guys pitching in the playoffs. But hey, maybe Selby ends up being That Guy for us.
    • I know you know, but we gotta adjust from just to cover innings over 162 to playoff time. We won’t need more than Burnes, Eflin, Coloumbe, Cano, and Dominguez. Maybe one of Akin/Perez.
