Updated: Orioles acquire Taylor Teagarden

Hand wringing is what this place does best. I can't believe a Taylor Teagarden- Randy Henry trade is gonna reach 20 pages, potentially in one day.

I'd rather spend 20 pages on a minor deal that actually happened, then spend 20 pages on some hypothetical deal that will never happen.

I was reading the thread from when he was drafted. There was just as much anger that the Orioles dared to pick him in the 4th? round, as there is about trading him for Teagarden. What a wave of emotions on here, lol. You can't make this stuff up. My opinion is that it is no loss, and nothing to be angry about. Dime a dozen low minor relief prospect. Of course, some people need to show outrage against the O's, even if its unjustified, so have at it!

Seriously, before this trade, everyone was sitting around salivating over Henry's September 2014 debut as a mop-up specialist? We'll draft another guy every bit as good in the fourth round or later this year. Meanwhile, having a competent backup catcher could have some nice ripple effects. As someone else mentioned, freeing Matt up for more DH'ing. Keeping him fresh. Etc.

Imagine starting Tea, and having Matt coming in off the bench as a pinch hitter, with switch-hitting power late in the game. That'd be nice.

The other thing people aren't talking much about is, apparently the kid has a great personality - good with pitchers, strong leadership ability, and a good clubhouse guy. DD seems pretty keyed in on "intangibles," which is good.

You don't see the irony in this? TT is a former BA top 100 prospect, the type of guy you constantly salivate over... until they get to the big show and fall short, then you begin to lose interest. Okay, he's a catcher, and we didn't need a catcher two years ago, but that doesn't make the entire point invalid. that point...YOU'RE OBSESSED WITH PROSPECTS.

What are we really losing in Henry? A potential 2014 bullpen arm? What's he going to give us that we can't easily get elsewhere or already have?

This just comes off as complaining for the sake of complaining. Just because we didn't swindle TT away from Texas for nothing doesn't mean this is a horrible trade.

Just because you fail to comprehend a very simple and logical argument doesn't mean I am complaining for the sake of complaining.

And just because I like prospects has no bearing on this...that is just idiotic.

What is the value of Henry? I'd have to say an average reliever who gets hurt every year and pitches to his peripherals at A ball probably is worth a fraction of one win. One out of six or eight of those guys end up with Nate Snell's career. The others go back for their associate's degree, or hang drywall or sell cars.

I'd rather not trade upside for not upside. Again, since this is somehow unclear: I am not upset and I realize how insignificant any goodness or badness any trade this small might have is. But the details are where smart people live, and I think we overpaid to fill a position that you can usually fill for free.

As a back-up C, he'll put in roughly 300-350 innings behind the plate, and bat 125-150 times. Meanwhile, a reliever is going to throw maybe 50-70 innings. I'd probably rather have an above-average reliever than an above average backup C, but I'd rather have a guy who is already in the majors and will be an above average back-up C, than a guy who might make the majors someday and if he's lucky will be above average some day.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but another benefit of a solid backup is that Wieters can rest more and get some AB's as the DH.
