Suing Angelos never seems like a good idea.

Stu doesn't have much money. I am sure that he is simply trying to get workman's compensation because he was unable to return to his profession after the surgery. The injury occurred while an Orioles attorney. I am assuming that the master denied his claim and he lost his appeal.

Roch's writeup from 12/1/12:

The Orioles' decision to designate reliever Stu Pomeranz for assignment and allow him to become a free agent was related to a back injury that will require surgery.

The club is in the process of arranging the surgery for Pomeranz, according to an official. He won't pitch in 2013.

The injury involves a vertebrae in Pomeranz's lower back and is considered pretty serious, according to another member of the organization. However, the Orioles could choose to re-sign him to a minor league deal.

Manager Buck Showalter has spoken highly of Pomeranz and hoped to get him on the expanded roster in September, but the right-hander's health wouldn't allow it.

Pomeranz, 27, didn't permit an earned run in 23 1/3 innings over 10 appearances divided evenly between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. He walked three and struck out 35.

Pomeranz gave up two runs in six innings with the Orioles. He tore his left oblique on May 27, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 6 and apparently sustained the back injury while rehabbing in Sarasota.

The Orioles designated Pomeranz for assignment last night to make room on the 40-man roster for infielder Yamaico Navarro, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league right-hander Jhondaniel Medina. The Orioles later announced that Pomeranz was non-tendered, along with first baseman Mark Reynolds and infielder Omar Quintanilla, making all three players free agents.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Pomeranz in the second round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. He pitched for the independent New Jersey Jackals of the Canadian-American Association in 2009, and the Orioles signed him to a minor league deal on Feb. 3 with an invitation to spring training.

Pomeranz has overcome injuries and alcoholism, which he's acknowledged, in order to get his career on track. Now he's faced with another health crisis.

Everyone should read the Nate Jackson article on deadspin. Former Denver Broncos TE. Basically the team gets you to sign stuff every day after treatment saying you are feeling better and are healed. And if you don't, well you get released. They make you compile evidence against yourself so that when you're done playing you can't claim that you are hurting from any previous injury. Hope he wins. The team has workers comp insurance. So it's up to them.

He fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never sue a Greek lawyer when death is on the line."

    • We'll see good SP opponents anyway, but notable winter player friendly contract Frankie Montas is already on the IL for them. Some of how the Orioles outplayed the Yankees so far this week was the athleticism on the bases contrast, and in Cincinnati the Orioles will see talent like theirs in that part of the game.   From a BP feature the other day on the Reds run production: Through this weekend’s games, the Reds were 25th in MLB in DRC+, but ninth in runs per game. That’s partially because of their aggressive and fruitful baserunning, but that stops far short of explaining it. The Reds have more stolen bases than any other team in the league, and they attempt to go first-to-third on singles more often than any other team in the league.  They’re tied with the Orioles for the league leadership, bringing around 38% of the runners who get on base. Last year, the league-average in that statistic was 31%, and the O’s led the league at 35%. Yes, the Reds’ speed helps them convert opportunities into something tangible. They’ve reached base on 15 errors this year, most in MLB, and a lot of those have been because they hit ground balls (eighth-most in MLB) and run well enough to compel opponents to rush things.
    • Nice post.  Guess that's why they call you Sanity Check.
    • I am promoting Webb to thread status.  Two dominant outings against the Yankees this week. 2.2 IP, no baserunners, 6 K's. And in only 28 pitches across the two games. His ERA is now below 2. I'm not sure he's really that good, but I think he has one of the most secure spots in the pen right now.
    • Imagine scoring 6 runs in 4 games, and also giving up a home run to Ryan McKenna.
    • The NL Central has been a bit of a trouble spot for us lately.   We are 8-13 against that division since the start of last year, losing 6 of 7 series (the one exception being Pittsburgh at Camden Yards last May when Cedric hit for the cycle and Wells pitched a gem). Weather could be a bit of an issue with a chance of rain Friday evening (though less than during the day there) and again Sunday afternoon. Will be weird seeing a Reds team without Joey Votto on it.   Last year he didn't play for the Reds was 2006.   Chris Ray was the Orioles closer that year; Jeff Conine was the starting LF.
    • Os have struggled against the NL central. It’s time to teach the central about the east.
    • His big AA debut and Povich's good bad game resulted in Weston taking a small 26-25 K-bb lead among Orioles minors length guys.
