Zach Britton Appreciation Thread

Damn onions

Quote

Manager Buck Showalter sat with Britton in his office until around 1 a.m., reminiscing and struggling to say their last goodbyes.

The conversation was one “we were both avoiding,” Showalter said.

“I knew he was still out there. There was a period there after the game that it wasn’t official. They were still looking over some medical records. But I finally looked out in the locker room and it was basically just he and me and the clubbies here. Got him in my office for quite a while. Tough.

“He was asking me some questions about New York. I gave him some advice. My best advice was, ‘Pitch well.’ It’ll go great. He will.

“We reminisced some. I asked him about his favorite moments here. That choked us both up.”

Both men lingered in the office until Showalter finally found a way to initiate the parting.

“I know at the end last night it was getting close to 1 o’clock and it’s like you don’t know how to say goodbye,” Showalter said. “He sitting there. I said, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do. You’re going to get up, you’re going to walk out that door, I’m going to get up and walk back to the shower, and see you later.’ I think he was relieved. It was like two people who don’t know how to exit.”

God, I am truly going to miss Zach. I remember the times when he came into.a game. He would set himself , peering over his right shoulder,  his  bright eyes poised at the batter with a piercing gaze.  He'd finger the ball in his left hand. Then he would throw that sinker. It dipped down as the batter swung over it or else a dribbler would dribble on the ground and Manny would scoop it up and throw it for a double play.

I have hated the Yankees since childhood.  I don't hate the individual players, I just hate the team as a whole. So I can follow Zach and see how he's doing and root for him. They're planning to use Zach as a set up man for Aroldis Chapman to close. I  don't think that Zach will be with the Yankees beyond this season. He'll be a free agent for next year, as he eventually signs with a team that needs a closer.

I truly hope that he returns to the Orioles,  once they begin to contend again.

I think this is very tough on Buck, seeing the players he coached to great success either deteriorate or leave the organization.   Weaver said he quit in part because he didn’t like telling players who’d helped him have success and who had been great teammates that they were washed up.    I think Buck finds that hard and he sometimes shades his evaluations of his players because of it.

And he is appreciated on the big stage.

I saw this and I said to myself, " I was for the trade, but I hate seeing this!"  Some may "look good" or are destined to be in "pinstripes" but I don't think Zach will IMO.

But since this is a positive appreciation thread, let me add my two cents.  I can't think of a better representative of the Oriole organization over his tenure with the club.  He was a stand up guy and a man's man (hopefully,  that isn't sexist).  Even when Buck made his error in Toronto, he never openly questioned the move.  We will miss him dearly as an Oriole and a real decent human.  Fare thee well in free agency!

justD's cousin gave us tickets to a Orioles Yankees game at the New Stadium. We made a big deal of getting there and enjoyed every bit of the game...Until Zach gave up the homer to Beltran to blow the save and lose the game. Sad.

On one hand I want the Yankees to regret this trade and on the other hand I don't like to see Britton doing poorly. But hopefully KC can hold that lead.

I'm just hoping they lose early in the playoffs and Britton signs elsewhere.

(Orioles vs. Yankees, 8/01)

Sonny Gray was booed off of the mound this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

I always love it when Yankee fans boo their players.

    • Farewell to Ryan McKenna, claimed on waivers by the Giants after being DFA'd the other day. We all have followed his career since his great 2018 season at Frederick. Ryan Mountcastle,  Cedric Mullins, and Nick Vespi are now the three remaining members of the Orioles 2015 draft class still in the organization.
    • I can see Adley aging on the Posey curve. He probably has until age 35 before he will hang up the spikes/be a negative valued baseball player. IMO Adley's defense is average, he has a below average throwing arm. But his bat is excellent. And there is no arguing that his presence has made a tremendous impact since the very first day that he stepped onto a Major League field for the O's. Gunnar may not extend because of Boras and the same may turn out to be the case for Holliday. But that should not preclude us from locking up the other guys who prove to be special. Right now Adley is that IMO and Westburg appears to be working his way toward that. But even if we do not extend our own guys, we should bring in others who will sign and impact winning in a positive manner.  Again IMO, not spending and cutting cost is not the way to go for franchise viability/growth. Customers/fans are more informed than ever and have more entertainment options than ever. Your message to them cannot be come out to see the Orioles just because we are the Orioles or "Hey we will probably win more than we lose (like the Rays) but won't make any real efforts to seize opportunities (by spending) when they are there." San Diego doesn't have a problem with fan engagement/attendance even though they don't/haven't won big because they have captured the attention of that market and become relevant by signing star players. And showing their fanbase that they are invested. I am not saying that I want to be like the Padres, but I certainly want the O's to be/remain relevant in this market (like they are now). Every time I take my kids to games, they are excited to go (in particular my youngest). That is how you capture the next generation of O's fans - by being relevant. 3 years ago I couldn't get my kids to go to an Orioles game no matter what! Conversely, I have never had that issue with the Ravens. They've always wanted to attend their games (even practices/training camp).
    • I see Toronto has lost the first two to Tampa for a 3-game losing streak after John Schneider's emotional proclamation of a "big win for May 14th" Monday night. They were up 4-0 with Gausman heading into the 6th today, but....nope.
    • Perfect.   That's when my salmon/tuna poke bowl will arrive via Uber Eats.
    • I'm way too much a snob for Blink-182. I was honestly just about to post this on the music forum.   Apparently he's Czech.  I'm not finding links in English. Anyhoo working on a Peel Session Spotify playlist.
    • With a couple of exceptions it’s almost like the bottom of the draft was better than the top of the draft
