This team is really off to a slow start offensively.    6 homers and 56 runs scored in 16 games.    Particularly disappointing so far are Yusniel Díaz (.224/.318/.362) and Ryan McKenna (.200/.308/.327).   McKenna has struck out 18 times in 65 PA, pretty unacceptable for a guy with so-so power (or anyone, really).

The bright spot has been Rylan Bannon, .288/.364/.492 with 2 homers and 12 RBI.

The pitching has been just so-so.   Lowther has a 1.93 ERA but only 10 K’s vs. 8 BB in 14 IP.    Harvey has a very disappointing 7.82 ERA despite 13.5 K/9.    Wells just made his first start and did respectably.   Zimmerman has been OK.   Tate has been bad (7.45 ERA) and is consigned to the bullpen for now.   

It all adds up to a 3-13 record, not what you want to see for a AA affiliate of a rebuilding team.   10th/12 In runs/game and 11th in ERA.

The positional prospects in the organization. have been very disappointing the pitching has had some good some bad, but positional guys only Mountcastle has done much of anything.

I'm most disappointed with Diaz and McKenna out of the prospects across all of our affiliates.  Diaz I expected to come out strong since he's repeating Double A.  I guess the Eastern League is much tougher than the Texas League as now we have a sample of close to 200 at bats where he's been meh.  His K/BB ratio is fine but doesn't appear to be doing much damage.  Just one HR and three doubles in 65 at bats this season.  

McKenna was on fire in the AFL, but he's striking out in almost a third of his plate appearances in Bowie.  He's at .186 .595 now.  

Looking forward to Hays' return.

4/11 no hit shutout

4/20 five hit shutout, four hit shutout in doubleheader 

4/22 three hit shutout

4/24 no hit shutout

All in 19 games played.   I’d say this is a weak offensive team.

As pointed out by Frobby, Bowie has been horrible.

Rylan Bannon is the top hitter right now, leading in most catagories (the only two players ahead of him on stuff is Chris Clare, who is on the IL and Austin Wynns, who was only there for 4 games of rehab.)

.364 OBP, .269 AVG, .463 SLG (second to Anderson Feliz, who was there for 5 games and is in Norfolk now), .826 OPS, 19 strikes outs to 9 walks in 67 AB's (28% strike out rate), leads the team in home runs (2), doubles (7), hits (18), RBI's (12) and tied for top in runs (7). His defense is the big question, as he has been used in a utlity role and has committed 3 errors, tied with Sean Miller.

Yusniel Diaz has also been much maligned, but isn't doing that much worse. The .221 average isn't the best, but he has less strike outs (12 vs. 19) in one more at bat (68 vs. 67) than Bannon. 3 less hits, 4 less doubles, 1 more triple (1 vs. 0), and 1 home run, so he isn't back too far, but the power doesn't seem to be there yet.

After that...There isn't much to be happy about. In 9 games, Chris Clare was leading the team in average and was starting to put it together. Martin Cervenka has been awful in his return to Bowie, striking out in almost half his at bats (21 k's in 50 at bats), with ZERO extra base hits and only 1 walk. After last season and needing to show something to the new staff, this isn't the best way to get noticed. Anderson Feliz was off to a good start and showing that last season wasn't a fluke, but got moved to Norfolk.

Ryan McKenna has gone ice cold after catching on fire in Arizona in the Fall League, getting 21 strike outs in 63 at bats and hitting only .175. The good news? He is walking, with a team leading (and tying) 9. His speed isn't there, being 1 for 2 on stolen base attempts. The good news for him? Cole Billingsly was doing even worse and was sent back to Frederick, allowing him a chance for more playing time.

Preston Palmeiro is showing none of the hitting skills he had in Frederick, struggling to a .120 average and only 1 extra base hit and 20 strike outs in 50 at bats.

If you have anything for Sean Miller to sign, go get it done now. A .081 (not a typo) average with only 3 hits and 3 errors puts him on the hot seat. With Adam Hall and Mason McCoy both tearing up their leagues, both could move up. Miller could be gone soon for McCoy, while Hall takes McCoy's spot in Frederick.

The only other player worth mentioning tends to be forgotten. After an MVP season in the Carolina League in 2017, Ademar Rifaela didn't put up big numbers last year in Bowie. He isn't putting up huge ones either this year, but he is putting some good contact on the ball, with 6 of his 14 hits going for extra bases (5 doubles, 1 home run). Strike out rate is still a bit high (17 in 57 at bats - 30%), but he is doing a LOT better than McKenna.

Pitching hasn't done them a lot of favors either.

Top pitcher? Zach Pop (0.96 ERA in 6 games, 9.1 innings, with 9 strike outs and 4 walks. 1.07 WHIP).

The majority have a WHIP (Walks/Hits per Innings Pitched) around/over 1.50. Zac Lowther has struck out 10 while walking 9 and allowed 9 hits in 14 innings. Hunter Harvey leads the team with 19 strike outs (with 4 walks) but has also served up a team high 4 long balls already in just 12.2 innings pitched. His recent outing today was brilliant though (5 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 2 k's).

Dillion Tate has been the biggest disappointment. In 9.2 innings, he has a 7.45 ERA, 12 hits, 5 walks, 2 hit batters, 2 home runs, and 8 earned runs allowed for a 1.76 WHIP. He moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen in favor of keeping Tyler Herb there. That should tell you something.

At any rate, if this keeps up, the season at Bowie will be longer than the season in Baltimore. Who knew we could say THAT at the beginning of the season when the rosters came out?

Save us, Austin Hays. You're our only hope.

Disappointing for Diaz and Mckenna but I wasnt really expecting much from the other position players on this team. Bannon would be legit if he could handle playing 3B or 2B. Doesn't look like hes settled in defensively yet.
