The last time an Oriole pitcher named Hall won a game

D. L. Hall was the winning pitcher in the first game of the doubleheader this afternoon (Oct. 5, 2022).

The last time an Oriole pitcher named Hall won a game was 51 years ago, on Aug. 26, 1971, when Dick Hall was the winning pitcher in a strange 8-7 victory over the White Sox.

Probably not one of Dick's fondest memories.  He entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with the Orioles leading, 7-4, but the Sox had two on and nobody out.  Hall gave up two singles and two sacrifice flies, allowing the tying runs to score.

Dick finished the seventh inning and held the Sox scoreless in the eighth.  The Orioles scratched out a run in the bottom of the eighth to take an 8-7 lead.  Since Tom Shopay had pinch-hit for Hall, Eddie Watt came on to start the ninth inning.

Watt was ineffective, and two White Sox runs crossed the plate.  Weaver went to the mound to call for another relief pitcher.

And then it rained.  Long and hard.  Long enough that the game was eventually called.

Under the rules that existed at the time, since the Orioles had not had a chance to bat in the bottom of the ninth, the two runs Chicago had scored before the rains came did not count.  The score reverted to what it had been at the end of the previous inning, giving the Orioles an 8-7 win and making Hall the winning pitcher.
