“Orioles big game shopping & most believe it's exclusively rotation”

The Orioles have not signned a legitimately elite free agent since Tejada almost 20 years ago, so you'll have to forgive me for remaining skeptical.

You don’t consider Rougned Odor to be elite?

We are in a different position than any time since then, in terms of competitive position vs. low payroll.  So, we have more ability to consider an elite signing.  That doesn’t mean it’s the right move to put so many eggs in one basket.  We’ll see what they do.

Davis?

Old Man Peter was the only person who thought Davis was legitimately elite and bid against himself accordingly.

You're right, how could I forget the man who carried the 2022 Orioles on his back to their first winning season in half a decade? I'm mortified!

Joking aside though, I do agree that this particular moment in time is probably the best situation we have found ourselves in to make such a move in quite awhile, and with so few payroll commitments and so much cheap, young talent already here and still in the pipeline, I would be much more open to a high risk/high reward move like signing deGrom than usual. If he can be had on a 3 year deal, I'm absolutely in, and might even be talked into going to 4 years. When healthy, he is genuinely the best pitcher of this era.

If GrayRod reaches even 80% of his potential, and deGrom can stay relatively healthy, that would be one hell of a 1-2 punch.

I don't think I would believe it until I saw him in uniform at a Press conference.  Even then, I think I'd have to pinch myself.

What scares me is DeGrom’s innings pitched 64, 91, and 68. Baseball reference has him projected to pitch 101 innings. I just don’t see how any team could justify paying him 30-40 for that and 2ish WAR.

The justification would be if he pitched 15-20 of those innings in the playoffs and you win a WS.  I don't think I would be so brave to do it if it were my decision, but there is absolutely huge upside to the deal.

As I have always said … it isn’t my money.  If they want to make a run at the top tier, then good!!  If they want to spend that money otherwise, good too-you could get Bassitt AND Eovaldi and a bat   lol.

Let’s say 4 years 160 mil for DeGrom.. .. so contract cost for Bassitt 60, Eovaldi 50 and Abreu 35

Here’s Steamer’s IP projections

Bassitt 196

Verlander 190

Rodon 178

Taillon 170

deGrom 168

Quintana 164

Lyles 164

Kluber 159

Eovaldi 155

Manaea 154

Syndergaard 153

Walker 152

Heaney 140

Greinke 136

i have no idea how they come up with these.  Bassitt has never pitched 196 innings in his career.  He’s thrown 162+ exactly once.

Bottom line, it’s really tough to forecast what pitchers will get through a season unscathed, much less 3+ seasons.

And as I recall with Tejada that was a relatively cool free agent market with not many suitors allowing the Orioles to make a play for him.

Orioles are a team on the upswing now and should be a more attractive destination for free agents besides just the money. Obviously the money still matters, but it’s not the only reason to join the Orioles.

    • The Orioles are one game back of the Yankees in the loss column for the division, 6 games up on the Twins for the first Wild Card, 7 games ahead of the Royals for the last playoff spot. We may not win the division but it would take an abysmal second half to miss the playoffs.  Given that I would love to add to this team in the bullpen and a starter if the price was right but I would give us as good a chance as anyone to win the AL even if we didn't make a trade based on our top two starters and the power of our lineup.  I believe our lineup with Mayo at third or Holliday at second by the start of the playoffs to go with Gunnar SS, Rutschman C, Santander RF, O'Hearn DH, Westburg 2B/3B, Mountcastle 1B, Cowser/Kjerstad LF and Mullins CF is better and likely significantly better than any team but the Dodgers.
    • It is more or less. Once you get in the playoffs, all the teams are talented and all the teams have some kind of weakness. Sure there are better teams on paper and some of the teams probably have more talent than others. But I just don't think it's all that drastic of a difference most of time. It's not like you're sticking the Athletics or White Sox in the playoffs and calling it a crap shoot.
    • The 2018 Red Sox won 108 games that year. I don't remember many if any people questioning their chances or considering them a long shot goin into the tournament. There are a few other teams on that list who were by no means long shots either. No on to your point about posters on this board, as late as last week there were several posters arguing that Irvin/Suarez/Kremer/Povich would be fine as your third starter going into the postseason. Now, after 3 consecutive series of really poor pitching, some have changed their minds. But many have shifted from "we don't need to trade" to "we can get a good pitcher but don't trade any of our good prospects". Like it somehow works that way.
    • He's athletic enough to play there is the main thing. The rest is a learning curve. Not sure the timing is right when they're trying to make the playoffs, there's likely to be a few hiccups along the way. But I'd be fine with it. Who knows if they're even considering it?
    • Yeah , only if Holiday is motivated & desire the task of studying CF
    • No.  Nor are they going to lead the O's to the AL East cellar next week.  Elias is going to need to get some pitching, nobody is arguing otherwise.
    • Exactly this. While I appreciate he could be the guy, they are loaded at MIF. The more I watch Westburg the more I'm convinced he IS a dude. Calling up Mayo to play 3B I'm only slightly hesitant about because I've read regarding his defense. Westburg looks more comfortable at third to me, but I love that he's played 2B at a high level as well. Nice to have so many options.
