If they sign Rodney to anything approaching a 2 year, 20 million dollar deal then I will say that Dan Duquette is the worst GM in the history of Oriole baseball. That will put him over the great Syd Thrift.

That said, I do not believe they will do it. 36 year old relief pitchers are not what we need. Lets just stay in house for the closer and move on to looking for a starter. A good SP will push another candidtae into the mix in the bullpen. Maybe even for closer.

Syd Thrift. Can't touch this.

They won't sign Rodney for 10 million. The only way I see it happening is if Rodney comes down to Balfours price. Why should Rodney get more than Balfour?

MY quick and easy solution to this debacle: move Gausman to closer and let the other young arms battle it out for the #5 spot. Take savings and buy a bat:)

Drafting a guy top 5 and then making him a closer would be far worse then any other option the Orioles have.

.

Obviously, I would like to see him return to his 2012 form if the Orioles were to acquire him.

But .........

If he can get at least halfway between his 2012 form and his 2013 form, (about a 1.99 ERA, about a 1.050 WHIP, and about 1 walk every 3.75 innings), that would still be awesome.

But he wasn't used as a matchup pitcher. Teams were already doing this against Hunter. Despite the poor numbers against lefties last year, Hunter had a very good year overall.

I think the opposing team's strategy would change if Hunter was the closer--teams would be more willing to bring in a lefty pinch hitter to face Hunter in the 9th than they would earlier in the game, because they'd be less worried about Buck countering with a lefty, and they'd be less worried about defensive consequences or the availability of bench players later in the game.

And there's also the fact that Hunter has problems pitching in consecutive games--a must for a closer.

If the O's don't sign anyone, I'd be happiest to hear that the O's were going with a closer by committee--use Hunter when the team's best righty hitters are coming up in the 9th, use Matusz when David Ortiz represents the tying run, etc.

If Buck didn't learn his lesson about this in the playoffs, we are screwed. Bringing in Matusz may have won that series.

    • It’s a tough call. The O’s need more help in the bullpen, both short term and long term, than they do in the outfield. But I think the state of affairs are well enough that you can really pick and choose your keepers. Kjerstad is a “nugget” (are we still using that term?) and the back of the bullpen, while a weak spot on an otherwise great team, isn’t really that bad off or anything. So you offer out the guys that obviously don’t have a place here, presently Norby, Stowers, and Beavers, and take what you can get for them…assuming you’re not giving them away of course. No reason to put Kjerstad in that mix if you dont have to…and they don’t have to.
    • This is of course a pretty well reasoned post...but it comes undone a bit at the end.  Valuing players and trading value for value is what every good GM strives to do. And saying we have Beavers so we can trade Kjerstad is of course correct, but you absolutely don't want to devalue what you get in return for talent because you have more. On the margins, sure.  But if you value your work, and it is clear that Elias does, and you believe these guys still have value, you don't just give em away because you have plenty.  I know that is not what you are really saying.  But the counter is also true.  I don't think keeping people to have 1-9 homegrown is a thing.  And I would rather trade Kjerstad for a bat that might push us over the edge than trade him for two middling relievers.  He is more valuable than that today even taking into account the wide range of outcomes he could have. I believe we will make trades before the deadline.  I don't think Elias cares where the starting 9 comes from but I think he will look for true upgrades.
    • Cool!  That's much better than winning a playoff game!
    • fwiw, in the clips before his HR derby swings, he's got the leg kick in the highlights.  Dunno if it's "the same" leg kick we're seeing today, but it's pronounced.. possible he was "cheating" his swing in the derby, but i dunno. 🤔
    • Shohei changed from a leg kick to a toe tap during his first US spring training, because he was late on everything when he got here.

    • Fangraphs still hesitant to move the O's into their top "The Best of the Best" tier. That title belongs only to the Dodgers and Braves for now, with the O's one notch lower in "On The Cusp of Greatness" along with the Phillies and Yankees.  Looking back, this is the Dodger's first week returning to top billing after two weeks where their Tier 1 was simply "The Braves." The Yankees had a couple appearances in the top tier during their early hot streak. But I'm thinking the O's will spend much of the summer with ATL and LAD in "The Best of the Best." At Fangraphs, and in popular opinion as baseball's current big three.  https://blogs.fangraphs.com/fangraphs-power-rankings-april-29-may-5/
