Between Billy Beane and Zaidi, they traded Gordon and Donaldson last year. For very little return.

If the Dodgers had known they had a future batting champion and Gold Glove winner on their hands, wouldn't they have asked for a better deal? In addition to Gordon and Haren, the Dodgers sent the Marlins $12.5 million to cover their salaries.

...

"I would say he exceeded our expectations," Zaidi said. "I think he exceeded everybody's expectations. That's a testament to him and his work ethic and his ability to improve. There were definitely people in our organization that felt like he had shown that ability to improve."

Why are we so concerned about losing the 15th overall pick to sign someone like Gordon?

Isn't the average total pre-free agency WAR of a 15th overall pick something like 4?

Gordon probably averages 3-4 WAR per year over a 5 year contract.

People seem to think the Orioles are actually going to get a good player at 15.

To be fair, that pick may end up better than 15. It's a tough deal, and yet another reason why re-signing Chris Davis is the best deal for a star offensive player.

Good. One less draft pick and they pick up a guy that the Jays kill and whose success this year was predicated on an unsustainable strand rate.

Hmmm.

Chen doesn't walk many batters and pitches to contact with an average H/9 and a high HR rate. The Orioles hitters would match up well with that, you'd think.

Correct, we need to lay the groud work for letting Manny leave at free agency. Not worth the length of the contract.

Show me a position player worth 15 wins by age 23 who would have been a disaster in his 30s. There are 24 guys who meet that minimum, and by my count the following were poor bets on the back end of a 10-year deal:

John McGraw - aged poorly at least in part due to injuries and diseases that 19th-century folks dealt with but modern medicine has eliminated.

Cesar Cedeno - yep, he's kind of a worst-case here, but was still nearly had a HOF career in his 20s.

Andruw Jones - see Cesar Cedeno

Joe Jackson - wouldn't be on the list if not for taking cash from mobsters to throw the Series.

The other 20 guys would have been pretty awesome on a 10-year deal at 26, or are Bryce Harper and Mike Trout.
