He’s the logical best choice left but you start to worry about an aging guy with declining stuff. At what point does he completely fall off a cliff?  Could happen at any point.

His fastball velocity was down last year.  Chase rate, fastball spin, curveball spin still good.  On a 1 or 2 year contract there’s not too much risk.  He’s one of the best bets to give you innings as well.

The risk is he is no longer good. The money risk means very little since we have so much and so many cheap contracts.

I want to win 2023. No extra points because you didn’t sign risky contacts.

Junkballer.  Averaged 88.9 mph on his 4 seamer and sinker.   Gave up more hits than innings pitched.   Smart pitcher though.   Has had some injuries in recent years in spite of making 31 starts last season.  Made 13m last year counting incentives.  Will pitch 2023 at 37 years old.

The risk on Eovaldi is that he is not good and can’t get through the season healthy.   After Rodon, Verlander, and Degrom there was a second tier.   Bassitt was probably the best bet.  However, you could have thrown all of those names in a hat and whoever you picked had a decent chance of being the best in 2023.   Kluber, Quintana, Bassitt, Eovaldi, etc.

It looks like they might go “last man standing” which begs just  the question of why they jumped on Gibson so quickly or a trade is still in the works.  Or they might just stand pat.  Just seems funny to cry each time a not so great pitcher goes off the board.

Walk rate in the 99% and chase rate in 96%.   That’s good.
