It is interesting that he is showing command and pitch-ability despite having grown up in a country where baseball is uncommon.

Usually, that's what you'll get out of these guys, though. When the quality of batting is lower, pitchers don't need to be overpowering to have success; they can dominate just by putting the ball in the right spots and changing speeds. A guy who had success in Australia will more likely than not follow that profile.

In a rather astounding coincidence, both Alex Wells and his twin brother Lachlan are currently posting the same ERA, 1.76. Lachlan pitches for low A Cedar Rapids in the Twins organization, and was signed the year before Alex signed with the O's.

Alex has his work cut out for him, because his brother Lachlan lowered his ERA to 1.26 today.

Lachlan Wells rarely talks about baseball with his twin brother, Alex, but on Thursday the Minnesota lefty couldn't resist.

The Australian twins -- Alex is an Orioles prospect -- entered the day with identical 1.76 ERAs this season.

"Being twins and having the same ERA, it's a little freaky," Wells laughed. "When I first found out, I thought, 'That's actually pretty cool.' To be in different leagues and pitching against different hitters and having the same ERA? It was really cool, and I talked to him about it -- he didn't even realize it until I told him."

But Wells changed that scenario Thursday -- the Twins' No. 28 prospect struck out eight over six scoreless innings in his fourth start of the season to lead Cedar Rapids past Lake County, 8-1, on Thursday afternoon.

Wells (2-1) lowered his ERA to 1.26 and did not walk a batter or allow a runner into scoring position in the longest start of his career.

He sure does pound the strike zone. 3 walks in 38 innings? Supposedly his twin brother throws a bit harder, but since Alexander seems to have a slightly bigger build, the thought (well, my thought) is he's more likely to add velocity and probably has a higher ceiling.

9 up, 9 down in the first 3 innings.

He ran into trouble in the 4th.

He rebounded to retire 6 out of 7 batters between the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. At that point, he gave up a walk, a single, and another walk to load the bases with 2 outs. A visit from the pitching coach helped to settle him down, as he retired the next batter on 3 pitches (all strikes) on a grounder to the shortstop, ending the threat and putting a finishing touch on his 6 innings of 1-run ball.
