Don't teams have insurance for contracts like this where the player gets injured? Or is that not really common in mlb?

Don't give John Angelos any ideas, technically he still has the opportunity to win the title back by tearing up AJ's one day contract and cancelling that ceremony.

I think insurance covered Albert Belle's injury and salary. But that was over 20 years ago. I have no idea how it's done now.

Because of his injury history, they could not get the contract insured.

The Nats did not have insurance on Strasburg, per reports.

I think the insurance covered 75% of his salary.

Didnt the Orioles have to keep Albert Belle  on the 40 man roster for many years?  Till the years were covered.

Yea, only really made a difference for one day a year but yea.  Take him off the 60 day DL, put him back on the 60 day DL.  I don't recall it ever having any real consequences for the team.

Yes. If he had retired, the payments to him would have stopped.

Chris Davis waited until the last year of the contract to retire. For some reason the team decided to pay him his salary for that year. He will still get paid for the deferred part of the contract.

I’m sure those was part of the deal Boras negotiated regarding Davis’ retirement.  The final year’s salary was paid over two years (meaning, they are paying it off right now).
