Another HR for Mancini tonight, gives him 7 on the year already. Awesome to see him picking up where he left off last year.

They should see if he can play in the corner outfield positions too. Unless they are going to trade him. And they will be very sorry if they trade him.

One should wonder if Mancini was sent back to AA to simply get some set number of AB's in AA (500?) or was it to specifically to work on certain things at a level which he already had success?

Mancini, even during his great year last year at Bowie (.359 avg./ .981 OPS) walked just 22 times in 84 games. He also struck out only 58 times.

This year, in 16 games, Mancini already 10 walks and 17 strikeouts. However, he also has 7 homers compared to 13 last year. This leads me to believe that the O's have told Mancini to work the count and wait for his pitch. The deeper counts are leading to more walks and strikeouts. They are also leading to more cripple pitches that he can launch. 19 hits this year. 11 for extra bases. Last year in Bowie, 117 hits, 45 for extra bases. The bigger difference being the home run rate, IF it continues.

He's certainly doing very well at the areas that still presented question marks in his game after last year. He clearly showed a good hit tool and doubles power last year, but bad K/BB rates and questionable HR power. Now he's doing everything.

If it ain't locked it will still be bumped. Might be three years but it will happen.

It's nice to have meaningful prospects so close the majors again. Box score following is pretty boring this year across the board. At least AAA will be interesting with Walker, Mancini, Flaherty(just for laughs), and the OF's there. The rest of the system is just 4 guys to check on. Cisco, Reyes, DJ Stewart and Mountcastle. If Cisco could earn a promotion we could have our best offensive "prospect" group of guys ever in Norfolk.

Mancini tagged #9 last night. One behind Manny..:)

Number 10 was sent flying...and Trey "Boom Boom" Mancini called it....

from the Norfolk Pilot Ledger...

Babe Boomer

Mancini, a 24-year-old first base prospect, did provide a unique highlight before he hit a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Like Ruth allegedly once did, he called his shot.

As Mancini waited to go on deck, Johnson and left fielder Christian Walker were discussing Walker’s three-run shot in the fifth, which gave him seven for the season.

“Somebody here has nine home runs,” Johnson said within earshot of Mancini.

“About to be 10 right here,” Mancini replied, and he sent a 2-2 fastball from left-hander Matt Purke the other way, high over the wall in right center field.

So he didn’t point to center field with his bat; he technically called it.

“It was just more of a joke than anything that I said it,” said Mancini, who hit seven homers at Double-A Bowie before joining the Tides on April 25. “I wasn’t thinking about it when I was at the plate or anything.”

Still, it made a mark on his manager.

“Yeah, that was pretty impressive,” Johnson said. “I enjoyed that.”

Mancini is currently posting an .860 OPS in Norfolk, which is not easy to do. If he's able to stay in that neighborhood the rest of the season, then we need to find a spot for him in Baltimore in 2017.

The question is where? DH?

Dude is silencing a lot of doubters. Love it.
