Terrin Vavra Bandwagon

He gets on base.  Nothing about his approach or his minor league resume suggests that he is a fluke.  He needs to be hitting at the top of the order--if there are concerns about his defense, make him the regular DH when Adley is catching, and give him chances at 2B or LF when Adley is the DH.   He can be our answer to Stephen Kwan.

He’s not replacing Santander’s bat. He’s replacing Mancini’s.   Replacing Odor is tricky.  Can Vavra make those throws from shallow RF? I think Vavra is more likely to replace Hays or Mullins eventually.   Urías is probably going to replace Odor and Henderson will take over 3B.

How can he play CF if his arm can’t make second base throws?

This.

Mullins has been a good RISP guy.  Maybe Cedric moves to the middle of the lineup.  Need Vavra leading off a bunch of innings.

As far as 2B goes, Vavra would have to play very poorly to limbo under the Odor standard.  Odor has cost the Orioles 10 runs relative to average on offense, 5 on defense, and 1 due to his higher than average DP rate.

I didn't say he couldn't make the traditional 2B throws.  The ones from short RF require a very strong arm.  We've had Mullins out there before he improved his throwing.  I bet Vavra throws as well as the new and improved Cedric.

A lot of the questions and speculation is probably answered by the player description in MLB orioles prospects.   The key characteristic of Vavra is that  he is had a very very good eye for pitching and knowledge of how to work for a superior OBP.  He also has good speed and I look at him as a future lead off batter.    He has good speed, + but not as fast as the standard ++ Orioles outfielder or the Mullens/Mateio +++.  Enough speed to have some consideration as a CF OF, but that isn't going to happen here where there is a different standard!.   Read the rest of the player description to appreciate what they say about his upbringing and development.  He looks like just the guy to start wearing down an opposing pitcher and having a high OPB to get things rolling in the first inning.

On the field, Vavra’s natural feel to hit stands out more than anything else. He works counts and knows the strike zone extremely well, walking nearly as much as he's struck out in his Minor League career. He’s known as a gamer who manipulates the bat head well and rarely gets fooled, consistently squaring up the baseball from both sides of the plate. The power is only fringe to average, though he’s shown more from the left side of the plate thus far. Defensively, Vavra profiles best at second but also showed well in center field in a small sample last summer.

That's a game and a half... which would put us in a tie by now for the Wild Card.
