You want a real experience - take a trip through the Sac-San Joaquin Delta.  The little communities and eccentric people in that region are a treat.  There is a Chinese community called Locke, east of Stockton, that looks like it probably did 100 years ago.   There are people living in boats on the river right next to multi-million dollar plantation type houses on acres of orchards.  It is an eclectic gathering of people.  You get the sense they don't want a lot of government types there, either.  They are more militant in the mountain and northern California towns with their signs for the State of Jefferson everywhere.
