Pudge dropped the 3rd strike and Melvin eventually went to first. Umps decided Melvin went out of the baseline, but event the Yankee announcers are calling it a sketchy call.

I'd love to hear the explanation on that one...because Mora definitely didn't go out of the baseline. He's walking along it and presumably someone yells to run to first which he does and then continues to second.

I don't think I've ever seen Trembley that pissed. And he never looked like he got mad at the umps until he got tossed...I wonder if he was more mad at GETTING tossed?

Yeah, but he had a good reason. The umps decided to call Melvin out just because he had a foot on the grass and after a conference. Most guys run farther outside the baseline on a basehit. Should be Huff up with guys on second and third.

Umps seemed to just want to be nice to the Yankees since they left the field before the play was officially over.

For what it's worth, this is probably the applicable rule/comment here:

Rule 6.09(b) Comment: A batter who does not realize his situation on a third strike not caught, and who is not in the process of running to first base, shall be declared out once he leaves the dirt circle surrounding home plate.

So he was out as soon as he stepped on the grass, I guess.

As much as Trembley spazzed, I think his argument was right. I mean it was a dropped strikeout. And Mora just kept on jogging around the basepaths.

Looks like this game is going to get heated even more so than it already is.

Really? It looked to me like he was clearly on a path to the dugout and changed directions when he started running toward first. I honestly think the umps got it right. Mora and Pudge were both sleeping on the job. Unfortunately for us our guy's brain fart canceled out their guy's brain fart.

Well, you're alone on that. Even Michael Kay thought the call was "sketchy."

It's been verified - you love the Orioles less than Michael Kay. ;)

What an impossible rule to put into effect. Just how long a pause between swinging and running is allowed? Do they use a stopwatch?

Nice pull, though.

Well to clarify...I'm not saying he wasn't going to the dugout. I'm just saying that he wasn't necessarily out of the baseline. At least not anymore than batters are on most balls put into play.

But what I'm saying is that Trembley was doing his usual calm chat thing and then all of a sudden West tossed him. THEN he got really upset so I wonder if he got more mad at getting tossed. And what he said that got him tossed at that? I mean, he wasn't animated at all, maybe it was "all talk"?
