What to do with Matusz???

Can't believe there isn't any discussion of Matusz after yet another dreadful start. I don't see how they can keep him in the rotation. I believe he needs to spend the rest of the year at AAA with Tillman. I was shouted down in May for posting that I though he would be nothing more than a situational lefty out of the bullpen, but do any of you guys still believe he should remain in the ML rotation???

Don't feed the troll folks.

I'm not trying to...

But...

I could see skipping him a start. It honestly looks like he can't handle the heat (as someone mentioned a few starts ago, but I forget who or I would give them credit). He's DRIPPING sweat before finishing the first inning. He looks exhausted. Is he running out of gas? Is his arm tiring? His first pitch strike % is dropping late in the season, as is his control. Is that evidence of a tired arm as well? I don't see anything to gain from sending him down to AAA. He's proven all he needs to prove in the minors. But I'm in favor of skipping him a start. He looks worn out to me.

Simple- Tell him to stop nibbling around the outside corner like a sissy and attack the hitters. He gave up one hard hit last night then nibbled the rest of the game.

He is too good to pitch afraid

Someone told Bedard that the offseason before he K'd 223 guys in 180 some innings.

Well, I guess we'll have to take him out back and put him out of his misery now....

I think I noticed a reference in another thread about Matusz that comped him a bit to Bedard. Lots of pitches, nibbling, stamina issues.

Just to prove my point. First full year in the majors:

Bedard: 121 K's, 71 BB's. 5.2 IP Per start.

Matusz: 91 K's 47 BB's. 5.38 IP per start.

I guess a better K/BB ratio and a bit longer in starts means Bedard probably should have not stayed in the majors or maybe been a fringe matchup lefty too.

If Matusz doesn't have injury problems, there is no reason he can't be a long term successful lefty. Just some issues to work out.

A situational lefty out of the bullpen? Really? There is no reason to not keep Brian Matusz as a starter. None.

No reason???

How about a >14 ERA over his last 4 starts???

I get it this board is somehow emotionally invested in Brian Matusz being a competent major league starter.... so exactly how bad does he have to pitch before anyone on OH thinks a change in course is warranted???

Just to clarify...

You want to move the organization's prized SP prospect to a "Will Ohman role" because he's had 4 bad starts in a row?

Matusz needs to be starting every 5 days. Putting him in a situational lefty role in the bullpen does him no good. The team is going to lose 110 games. Just let him go out there and learn.

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
