A team might see a chance to win a World Series. And then a power-hitting, middle-of-the-order outfielder falls ill...

Some team might give up something of value.

Other than Torres I don't recall much recent history of teams overpay for a playoff run.

I'm not suggesting a Torres-level return or even close. There's a wide gap between that and nothing of value.

I don’t see the appeal. Our team is loaded with outfielders already, I can’t imagine any asset having very much trade value this year because the season is so tenuous, even if it gets underway.

Even if we do sign him and the season does get underway, potential playoff teams will have such a vast selection of potential trade acquisitions it’s unlikely we would get anything meaningful for him in the best of circumstances.

It is better to focus on our own guys and see what they offer.

Hays and Santander. Who am I missing?

Rather they just wait the 7 days and put Mountcastle in Left or give Diaz a shot

Yeah, he's on the market now.  If another team wants him for 60 games they can sigh him now.  What would be the point of a team not signing him, then trading anything of value for 25 games worth of him for the stretch run.  I suppose if a contender loses there RF to a well timed August injury, say a Judge or something.

But it seems unlikely to me.  If we are trying to sign him I doubt it's with any significant hope of turning around and trading him 6 or 7 weeks later before the deadline

It doesn't make sense for the O's to sign him and not try to trade him for prospects.  That would be a waste of 3-3.5m dollars.   If the report has any validity, Elias is thinks of something.

I think it is likely that you won't get a good return on your money if you do trade him.

How good a prospect do you need to get to break even on what you pay Puig?

Mountcastle shortly after the beginning of the season and DJ Stewart. But with 1B/DH slots, I think there would be room for all 5. And Santander may not be ready for the start of the season.

Well in addition to the Smith-level guys Stewart, Mountcastle, McKenna( isn’t he close enough?) Mullins, and I’m drawing a blank after them, but that’s enough. We got 2 and one spot remaining for a corner and a backup. I have reservations about both MC and Stewart, but what better time to throw them into the fray than right now?

Puig won’t bring anything, and will take playing time away from guys who might be part of the future.

its much better to treat this season like an extended spring, and see what our guys can do.

What do you really mean by "breaking even?" Payroll is low. I'm guessing Puig's prorated salary would be between $1 -2 million.

This is akin to paying x dollars for a mystery prospect from a grab bag. Yes, it's a gamble, but for a rebuilding team, the goal is to accumulate prospects.
