Just thinking out loud... The Pirates could become a really good team with all the young talent they have. They just need an owner who would keep the young core together instead of letting them all walk thr first chance they get.

Hopefully we have that kind of owner.

The Pirates are my answer when someone says, “Oh the Os are only good because they had so many top picks while they were tanking.”  You gotta draft well and know how to develop the talent.

Your point about us not giving them all away is something I’d left out of that equation, definitely a factor as well.

I provided my source.

Anyway the numbers are close enough to each other that it doesn't make any difference.

Friend, I wasn't nitpicking or criticizing.  Just speculating as to why we posted different figures at the same time, that's all.

I think the owner started to give in and got Keller, Reynolds and Hayes on some affordable deals.  Hopefully, the Orioles will do the same.

I didn't take it that way, I was just stating that I showed where I pulled my data from.

I certainly didn't the work myself.

I used the 2010-2015 chart.

    • A little surprised there wasn’t more activity in the morning across the league. Curious if there’s something holding it all up and then a bunch of dominoes will fall after.  My guess is it’s Crochet - I don’t see the Dodgers ending today without Crochet or Flaherty. If they can’t get Crochet, they’ll probably have a 50 FV prospect on the table for Flaherty that nobody else wants to top.  Yankees seem to want Flaherty and then to trade Cortes, that’s pretty complicated to accomplish if it’s not coming together soon. And it could be that their offer for Scott is contingent on what they get for Cortes.
    • A one-year commitment to a SP is radically different than the extension Burnes is looking for. Boras is going to want to test the boundaries IMO.
    • This season is worth investing in. I'm actually advocating they pick up an additional starter, but I don't think it's essentially Skubal or bust. That's what I meant by saying somebody other than Povich/Suarez.  Even if Skubal is 1 WAR higher than Burnes, we are talking about 2 months left this season. To me, Eovaldi would be just fine. Blake Snell as a salary dump from the Giants would be just fine and has the upside of being similar to that of Skubal.  I don't think it's defensible to not pickup another arm + bullpen arm.
    • I am not interested in arguing about the meaning of the word upgrade vs improve. By no means did I say the additions of Elfin and Dominguez solve this team's pitching problems. I think there is a chance that we extend Burnes. The fact that the O's just took on 18 million for Elfin next year suggests that is at least a realistic possibility. I also think it is reasonable to expect that some of our top hitting talent gets extended.
    • I agree, I am quite certain that if we acquire Scott we are not going to like what it took to get him.  Still, I think you have to make a play for him or someone similar.
    • And could we have paid them with the Burnes deal too?
    • Elias knew that Bradish was hurt. Burnes was the move to replace Bradish. Elias also knew that Means was having a lot of setbacks.  There’s a thread from the offseason in November where we talked about how Wells couldn’t hold up a season as a SP.  This ain’t rocket science. Elias could’ve just re-signed Gibson.  Suarez was a band aid to get us to the deadline. Now we’re going to the to pay more than anyone thought for Anderson or Flaherty 2.0.  It will be hilarious when we’ve had to trade 6 players for like 22 starts of Jack Flaherty, but I hope we do it. We need one more SP.
